At midnight on January 1, 1851, six Dominican Sisters from Kentucky arrived in Memphis having been invited to Tennessee to start a school for girls.
Another fire in 1900 caused lesser damage.
Pauline Gannon, a Dominican Sister, founded St Agnes Academy in 1905.
St Agnes opened on February 11, 1906, at 3901 Fannin Street in what is now considered to be Midtown.
Founded in 1908 by two Franciscan sisters, St Agnes has grown and changed through the years to meet the needs of a changing community and society.
In 1911, two wings were added to the building to accommodate the growing enrollment.
The community purchased the Porter property on the right side of St Agnes, and on October 5, 1918, the faculty of St Agnes established the Memphis Conservatory of Music where students could acquire a B.A. degree in music.
St Agnes Academy began a new phase of existence in 1951 at the present site on Walnut Grove Road.
In 1952, St Agnes began to serve grades 9 through 12 only.
St Dominic was opened for classes in 1957 with the understanding that the Dominican Sisters of Saint Catharine, Kentucky would operate it in conjunction with St Agnes Academy
