St. Andrew's Schools company history timeline

1867

The school opened on Ascension Day, May 30, 1867, under the direction of Queen Emma and Mother Priscilla Lydia Sellon of the Society of the Most Holy Trinity of Devonport, Plymouth, England.

1869

By the summer of 1869 there were enough students to organize the Sewanee Grammar School for younger boys.

1887

Two St Mary's Sisters spent the winter of 1887 at Sewanee in the first Hodgson Hall.

1897

School opened on August 30, 1897, with an enrollment of 25 pupils.

In 1897 the Academy of the Holy Names began in a rented house on North Fair Oaks Avenue in Pasadena.

Since its foundation in 1897, Saint Andrew School has been committed to quality Catholic education.

1902

In 1902, the school moved to Quintard Memorial Hall, named for the Vice-Chancellor under whom the Sewanee Grammar School opened.

1905

On September 12, 1905, St Andrew's School opened with four pupils.

1908

The Sewanee Grammar School changed its name in 1908 to Sewanee Military Academy, continuing the military influence that had disappeared from the University of the South.

1918

In 1918 Saint Andrew Parish purchased the Academy of the Holy Names from the Sisters, and it became a parochial school.

1923

In 1923, when more space was needed, the parish bought the Throop Building (occupied by the California Institute of Technology) located on Chestnut Street between Fair Oaks and Raymond.

1949

In 1949 the Throop Building was demolished and the current school building was constructed.

1968

With the demise of St Mary's School, in 1968 the University opened the Sewanee Military Academy to girls.

1969

Enrollment began to drop in the high school in 1969.

1971

In 1971, as military schools were closing across the nation, the military was abandoned altogether, and the school became Sewanee Academy, a co-educational, college preparatory school, still housed on the campus of the University of the South.

1976

In 1976, the school assumed non-profit corporation status with a board of trustees.

1980

Despite efforts to increase enrollment, Saint Andrew High School was closed on June 6, 1980 because of its decreased enrollment.

1981

Merger came in 1981 on the St Andrew's campus.

2013

In 2013, the St Andrew's Schools were formed, bringing St Andrew's Priory School under one umbrella with the existing co-ed Queen Emma Preschool and the newly created St Andrew's Preparatory School for Boys (The Prep) for boys in elementary school.
