1831

Sister Catherine McAuley founded the Sisters of Mercy in Dublin Ireland in 1831.

1851

The Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ, founded in Germany in 1851 by Katherine Kasper, initially pledging $750,000, upped the contribution to $1 million.

1863

The Sisters of St Francis of Perpetual Adoration was founded by Blessed Marie Theresia Bonzel in Olpe, Germany, in 1863.

1887

In 1887, Pastor Fogelstrom and five Deaconesses created a ministry which emphasized works of mercy and provided programs and services that served the sick, elderly and orphaned.

1890

Settled in the 1890's, the idea of building a hospital didn't take root until steel-making and manufacturing created massive job opportunities, attracting immigrants from all over the world.

1917

The Poor Handmaids (Ancilla Domini) had been advocates for the hospital construction since 1917.

1928

St Catherine's Hospital was dedicated on April 22, 1928 to honor three prominent women: Blessed Mary Katherine Kasper, who founded The Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ; Catherine Riley, mother of Col.

St Catherine Hospital accepted its first patient in May 1928.

1945

The hospital has expanded its footprint and its national reputation for award-winning care over the decades: The Fir Street annex was built in 1945.

1997

Catholic Health Services of Long Island (CHS) was founded in 1997 to oversee the Diocese of Rockville Centre’s healthcare organization which now includes six hospitals, three nursing homes, a regional home care and hospice group and a community based agency for persons with special needs.

Family Birthing Center opened in 1997.

2000

On February 29, 2000, Catholic Health Services of Long Island, (CHS), purchased St John’s Episcopal Hospital from Episcopal Health Services.
