St. Charles County company history timeline

1800

Nathan Boone worked under the Land Law of 1800, known as Harrison's Frontier Land Act, which required federal lands (public domain) to be surveyed and divided into 640 acre sections.

1803

Generals Wilkinson and Claiborne were jointly commissioned to take possession of the territory for the United States on December 20, 1803.

1804

Lewis and Clark's presence in the region will forever be linked with Saint Charles. It was in Saint Charles in 1804 that William Clark and Meriwether Lewis departed up the Missouri River seeking the route to the Pacific Ocean by order of president Thomas Jefferson.

1805

The government would then sell these in 320-acre blocks at two dollars per acre. (8) On July 4, 1805, the Territory of Louisiana was given separate territorial government.

1806

Before their return in September, 1806, the name had been anglicized to St Charles and the United States had established here the third post office west of the Mississippi.

1812

War of 1812 expand child menu

1816

(1816) When Howard County was cut off from the western part of St Charles, Cedar Creek which now forms the eastern boundary of Boone county, was established as the line between St Charles and Howard.

1818

Jean Baptiste Pointe Du Sable, the "Black Frenchman" who founded Chicago, lived the last 10 years of his life in Frenchtown and died in 1818.

Also in 1818, Saint Philippine Duchesne established the first free girls' school west of the Mississippi.

1827

Lindenwood College, a landmark private fine arts school, was founded in 1827.

1976

The City subsequently released their portion in 1976 to the County.

2020

In 2020, the airport's name was changed to St Charles County Regional Airport – Smartt Field Airport to reflect both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)'s and the State of Missouri's designation of SCCRA as a regional airport.
