Saint Dominic's Home company history timeline

1878

St Dominic's dates back to 1878, when a Dominican nun, Sister Mary Ann Sammon, headed up the Hudson to Rockland County to find a location for an orphanage for some of the thousands of children roaming the streets of New York.

1880

By 1880, it was apparent that the church was too small for its rapidly growing congregation.

1883

1883 - The cornerstone of the second St Dominic's Church is laid.

1887

1887 - Second St Dominic's church opens.

1905

1905 - The Dominican House of Studies, the seminary for the Dominican Friars of the Province of St Joseph (the "Eastern Province") moves to Washington.

1906

During the months following the great earthquake, parishioners gathered for Mass outdoors until, in October 1906, a wooden church opened on the Pierce Street side of the block.

1906 - The Great Earthquake destroys St Dominic's Church.

1923

Work did not begin on the fourth Saint Dominic's until 1923.

1928

Archbishop Hanna blessed the new church after construction was finished in 1928.

1928 - Fourth St Dominic's Church is completed.

1954

1954 - Much of Southwest Washington is demolished and rebuilt in accord with the Redevelopment Act.

1965

1965 - The church's new stained glass windows, designed by the internationally renowned Edward Heimer family, are installed.

1973

1973 - St Dominic's Centennial Celebration

1977

1977 - At the opening of the L'Enfant Plaza Metro Station, St Dominic Church becomes the first Catholic church in Washington to be located at a metro stop.

1984

1984 - Engineering tests determine St Dominic's Church is seismically unstable.

1986

The Saint Dominic's Preservation and Restoration Project began its work in 1986.

1989

The Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989 destroyed the beautiful "lantern" of Saint Dominic's tower.

1991

1991 - Sufficient funds raised to begin construction of nine flying buttresses.

2002

2002 - On August 13th, the Novitiate of the Western Dominican Province is moved to St Dominic's.

2012

October 7, 2012 - A new main altar is dedicated.

2015

October 1, 2015 - St Dominic's Young Adult group officially begins.

2016

October 28, 2016 - A newly renovated St Jude Shrine is blessed in the context of a solemn evening Mass on the Feast of St Jude.

2017

March 1, 2017 - New Confessionals begin being used on Ash Wednesday, after having been blessed the Sunday before.

2018

February 6, 2018 - St Martin de Porres Shrine in honor of Fr.

2019

May 1, 2019 - A first-class relic of St Martin de Porres is incorporated into his shrine.
