KU Topeka company history timeline

1909

The St Francis hospital began serving its community in 1909 as the mission of a group of Catholic nuns who rose up to meet a need.

1911

The first hospital was quickly outgrown, so a new Bell Hospital opened in 1911, still on Goat Hill, and almost doubled the capacity of its predecessor.

1924

By 1924, the hospital had outgrown its space again, so a new hospital was built on a site near the health system’s current main campus, about a mile south of Goat Hill, near West 39th Avenue and Rainbow Boulevard in Kansas City.

1955

His father, John C. Dicus, chairman emeritus of Capitol Federal Savings, earned a bachelor’s degree in business from KU in 1955.

1969

The health system’s first organ transplant, performed in 1969, was a kidney transplant and the system’s 5,000th organ transplant was also a kidney transplant.

1977

The region's largest blood and marrow transplant program, established in 1977, offers lifesaving procedures for leukemia, lymphoma and other blood cancers.

1998

The hospital marked an important milestone in 1998 when it became an independent hospital authority, receiving no state funding and no longer part of the School of Medicine.

2006

The Center for Advanced Heart Care later opens in 2006.

2007

Simien founded the Called to Greatness program in 2007.

2011

Through the University Engineering Expansion Act of 2011, the Kansas Department of Commerce is providing $35 million for the project.

It raised $1,700,000 in 2011 to support programs advancing the areas of education, health and income.

2017

In 2017, through a partnership between Ardent Health Services and The University of Kansas Health System, St Francis embarked on a new era.

The University of Kansas Hospital joined with the University of Kansas Physicians in 2017 to form The University of Kansas Health System.

2019

The facility in Kansas City, Kansas, opens in 2019.

2021

Padget, M. (2021, November 30). KU Faculty, Community partners to advance racial equity through newly funded projects.

The December 2021 opening of levels 8, 9 and 10 in Cambridge Tower A on the main campus in Kansas City adds 100 rooms for patients.

2021 Arts and Humanities Grant, The Achievement and Assesment Institute (AAI), University of Kansas

2022

Her recent curatorial project Making It Work: Art + Parenting will debut at the Lawrence Arts Center in May 2022.

2022 General Research Fund, University of Kansas

The proton therapy center will open on the health system’s main campus in Kansas City in mid-2022.
