St Francis Hospital of New Castle history

St Francis offered the first electrocardiograph in the area in 1915 and added an anesthesiology department.

In 1921, they built a four-story, 31 - room pathology lab.

In 1922, two Sisters of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary were traveling door-to-door selling embroidered cloths.

26, 1926 David Jameson, longtime New Castle resident and co-founder of Citizens National Bank, announces to the Shenango Valley Hospital officers that he will fund the construction of a new hospital.

19, 1927 The future site of Jameson Memorial Hospital is cleared.

8, 1929 Lois Pate is the first baby born at Jameson Memorial Hospital.

Marking the occasion in February of 1954, the Hospital's name was changed to St Francis Hospital and Sanatorium.

The Alvernia School of Practical Nursing opened in 1961. and six years later the Community Mental Health/Mental Retardation Center opened.

26, 1962 An addition to the School of Nursing opens in memory of Mr.

The late entertainer credited them and St Francis Hospital for saving his life in 1963 after he became seriously ill before a performance in Pittsburgh.

In 1974 a medical/parking complex went up. ' Three years later, construction began on an eight-story psychiatric building and new lab and an 11story addition, plus expansion of the emergency room and addition of a helipad.

In 1986 a name change created St Francis Health System and St Francis Medical Center.

An emergency helicopter landing pad was added a year later, and in 1990 a 150-bed skilled nursing facility opened.

A surgery center and medical office building were added a year later, and in 1994 the St Francis Regional Cancer Center opened.

In 1998, a new floor was added on top of the ambulatory care center, including a 35-bed hospital the first new hospital built in Pennsylvania in decades.

In June 2000, the health system announced plans for consolidation that included closing St Francis Central Hospital and entering into a management contract with UPMC for

May 1, 2016 Jameson Memorial Hospital merges with UPMC and becomes UPMC Jameson.

February 2018 A new fully-equipped cardiac catheterization lab with the latest diagnostic imaging devices and monitoring equipment opens on the first floor of the hospital.

May 2019 A modernized 12-bed critical care unit opens on the second floor.
