St. Francis Xavier Catholic School company history timeline

1842

St Francis Xavier’s College was founded in 1842 by the Society of Jesus.

1843

The school at first occupied a house at 36 Soho Street, but in 1843 it moved to 43 St Anne Street.

1877

The imposing college building, which can still be seen on Salisbury Street, was erected in 1877.

1900

St Francis Xavier Catholic School is the oldest private school in Brunswick, GA, established in Glynn County in 1900.

1902

In the spring of 1902, the parish purchased the property for and work began on the colonial-type building that served as a convent and school for so many years.

1905

In 1905, the Fall River Diocese’s first bishop, the Most Reverend William Stang, invited three priests from the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus & Mary to assist in serving his flock.

1906

In 1906, what is now St Francis Xavier Parish, and which remains the only Roman Catholic Church in Acushnet, Massachusetts, began as an area mission under the care of Sacred Hearts Fathers Bernard Pierson and Charles DeBaetselier.

1915

On the evening of February 2, 1915 a fire destroyed the first church.

On April 7, 1915, St Francis Xavier Mission became a parish.

1916

Sacred Heart STEM School (SHSS), originally known as St Francis Xavier School, opened in 1916 with eight classrooms on Cummins Highway across from Sacred Heart Church.

1922

Since 1922, Saint Francis Xavier School has been operated by Saint Francis Xavier Parish under the direction of the Sacred Heart Fathers.

1924

By 1924, due to the increasing number of parishioners and students of the parish school, the need for a new church building became clear.

1953

In 1953 a new convent, designed by C. M. McGarvey, was built for the sisters.

1954

In 1954 the present site of the school was purchased and a new school was opened named Sacred Heart School.

1957

Founded in 1957, our 1 through 8-grade campus serves children from as far west as Magna to neighborhoods on the east bench, and cities as far up as North Salt Lake to beyond West Jordan in the south.

1960

In 1960, the first expansion to the school was completed to accommodate the growing enrollment at St Francis Xavier.

1961

Three years later it was established at Salisbury Street, where it was to remain until 1961.

1965

In 1965, the new school building was opened at 223 Main Street.

The school began with just two grades, staffed by The Sisters of Divine Providence, and added a grade each year, until the first class of 8th Graders graduated in 1965.

1976

In 1976 a new Rectory was built near the church and the old rectory property was sold to the New Bedford Institution for Savings Bank which is now the Acushnet Federal Credit Union.

1988

The opportunity for schools to opt out of local authority control was given by the Education Reform Act of 1988.

1990

The application was subsequently approved by the Secretary of State, and, in consequence, St Francis Xavier’s College opened a new chapter in its history in January 1990, when it assumed complete control of its own management with direct funding from the Department for Education.

1996

In 1996 the Congregation of the Sacred Heart Fathers concluded their long and dedicated service to the parish.

2002

From September 2002 the whole school became situated on a single site at High Lee, Beaconsfield Rd.

2006

St Francis Xavier School’s state-of-the-art facility was opened in 2006 delivering the most innovative resources for children while creating a safe and secure learning environment.

2020

In the summer of 2020, our school began a partnership with Sacred Heart School in Weymouth.
