Howard T. Case and Martin B. Hoyt, a financier, founded the business in 1919.
1955:Robert Gavron joins printing company.
St Ives was founded by Robert Gavron in 1964.
The move into commercial-magazine printing came in 1969, when Case-Hoyt signed a contract to print Gourmet magazine, a monthly publication of Condé Nast and the first United States magazine devoted to haute cuisine.
The company president said in the 1979 story, “We’re interested in acquiring companies, not in being acquired.”
Needing capital to keep up with changes in computerized equipment, Case-Hoyt was purchased in 1984 by Bell Canadian Enterprises, a giant Canadian conglomerate.
Taking St Ives public in 1985, Gavron raised the capital to begin making a series of acquisitions, buying up many of its smaller rivals in order to build up its market position.
In 1985, Case-Hoyt closed its plant in Atlanta and bought Great Lakes Press, the Rochester area’s second-largest commercial printer.
1987:Acquisition of Burrups Limited.
1989:Acquisition of A.D. Weiss Printing.
But Case-Hoyt continued to produce prestigious projects, such as the official program for the 1989 United States Open, which was played at Oak Hill Country Club.
By 1991, St Ives was experiencing a cut in its profits.
Case-Hoyt closed the St Paul Street building in 1991 and consolidated operations in Chili with a building addition to Graphic Park.
Robert Gavron retired from his position as company chairman in 1993, taking a non-executive directorship while still holding a sizable share in the company he had built over 30 years into the foremost U.K. commercial printer.
Avanti Press Inc., a Miami-based firm, bought Case-Hoyt in 1993.
Despite rising paper costs--which caused the magazine sector to stagnate for a time in 1995--St Ives began to see renewed profit growth.
1995:Acquisition of Johler Druck.
1996:Acquisition of Perlmuter Printing.
These developments gave a boost to St Ives in 1997, as it was called on to print many of the related financial documents.
2000:Company announces two-year, £100 million investment program.
A London-based printing and publishing company, St Ives PLC, bought Avanti and Case-Hoyt in 2001.
At the same time St Ives announced its continued commitment to investing in its future, promising some £100 million in investments through the year 2002.
