St. John Home company history timeline

1906

He purchased three hundred and fifty (350) acres of land, and in 1906, built St John Orphan Home, but not without struggle.

1922

Appointed Bishop of Wheeling December 11, 1922.

1946

Starting with 1946, this was a period for marking time, patience, and perseverance.

1947

Thomas John McDonnell, D.D. Appointed Auxiliary Bishop of New York June 21, 1947.

1951

Appointed Coadjutor cum jure successionis to the Diocese of Wheeling March 7, 1951.

1952

Appointed Titular Bishop of Rusadus and Auxiliary of Richmond August 8, 1952.

1954

Promoted to rank of Archbishop “ad personam” March 12, 1954.

1956

The new era began July 17, 1956.

Robinson by the death of Moderator Black, October 14, 1956.

1958

In or around 1958 St Johns Preparatory school operated from the building and finally moved to Longdon Green a year before the Popps purchased the house.

1960

1960 brought the addition of a new wing housing administrative offices, craft rooms, lounges, and an auditorium, as well as 71 resident rooms.

1961

Appointed Coadjutor cum jure successionis to the Bishop of Wheeling on May 24, 1961.

1962

Succeeded to the See of Wheeling on November 23, 1962.

In 1962, the name was changed again to St John’s Home for the Aging and a new 64-unit apartment complex was built.

1966

Appointed Titular Bishop of Verbe and Auxiliary of the Archdiocese of Kwangju, Korea, on February 15, 1966.

1973

Appointed Auxiliary to the Bishop of Wheeling March 26, 1973.

1978

G. V. Clark was elected as moderator in 1978 and still serves today.

1981

Appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia and Titular Bishop of Afufenia June 27, 1981.

1984

St John’s Home for Children was incorporated as an independent agency in 1984.

1985

Appointed Sixth Bishop of Wheeling-Charleston June 4, 1985.

1987

Resigned as Auxiliary Bishop to embrace a life of solitude and prayer on the grounds of a Trappist Monastery September 22, 1987.

1992

When Metroboard dissolved in 1992, only the development or building applications for properties under the jurisdiction of the City were transferred to the Archives.

1995

A major renovation and expansion of St John’s Home in 1995 resulted in the creation of the Hastings Building, bringing the total of skilled nursing beds at that time to 475.

1997

From 1997 onwards the City utilized a market value system of taxation.

2011

Construction of Brickstone by St John’s began in 2011, just west of St John’s Meadows on Elmwood Avenue.

2012

Opening in 2012, our Green House® home in Penfield made history with a completely new concept in nursing homes: home-like facilities with skilled nursing care, all integrated into an existing community.
