Methodist Hospital is looking to hire a Sterile Processing Tech (SPD) to join our sterile processing team! Come join us as a Partner for Good and help us make an impact on the care and experience that our patients and their families receive every day. Position Summary: The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible and accountable for all functions of the sterile processing department, under the guidance of the sterile processing department supervisors and manager. This position is responsible for working independently and with team members to ensure that all surgical instrumentation are properly decontaminated, assembled, inspected, packaged, sterilized, high level disinfected, marked for repair and placed in a proper repair location, and communicate incomplete trays and missing items to management and OR immediately. All instruments must be distributed, tracked and stored in a safe, secure, aseptic and timely manner throughout the hospital and clinics. Immediate-use steam sterilization, tray turnovers between surgical cases and releasing sterilized loads from the department must be performed observing standard practice. Each team member will be qualified to train others as assigned and serve as a front-line resource to sterile processing customers. The primary responsibility of the Central Sterile Processing Technician is to prevent the growth and cross contamination of harmful microorganisms that will cause a negative effect for our patients, doctors, staff members, HPMC internal and external customers, and to themselves. This position accomplishes the primary responsibility by ensuring that all surgical instruments, scopes, power equipment, and sterilization containers are properly inventoried, decontaminated, inspected, assembled, packaged (containerized, wrapped, or peel packed), sterilized, and stored in the correct environment in a quality/time manner. Our main customers are Main Surgery, Labor and Delivery, and other areas that require sterile instrumentation. Performs duties as a CSPD tech independently, works proficiently without constant supervision and when competent helps train new employees. Identifies and uses appropriate methods and solutions to sort, disassemble, decontaminate, rinse, and disinfect instruments, scopes, surgical power tools, and clinical equipment. Operates and troubleshoots cleaning equipment. Appropriately handles garbage, linen, and bio-hazardous materials. Maintains safety standards within the decontamination area. Consistently uses recipes (count sheets) to correctly assemble, protect, wrap containerize and/or peel package and label instruments. Identifies and inspects instruments for cleanliness and functionality. Knows and follows correct principles of sterilization. Selects appropriate sterilization methods. Properly documents and verifies sterilization loads and biological tests to determine the efficacy of the sterilization process is required. Performing HLD (high level disinfection) is required (will train).score: N/A Contacts BIOMED if sterilizers are not functioning properly, informs manager of CSPD, and surgery. Works under indirect supervision of the Resource Technician performing daily activities of the Sterile Processing Department, which include all aspects of the decontamination, assembly of sets, sterilization processes, and specialty cart restocking (CPR carts, Disaster Carts, Case Carts and Specialty carts). Ensures functions are performed with conscious regard to the procedures while interacting professionally with other departments within the system. The CSPDT (Central Sterile Processing Department technician) must have knowledge of: surgical instrumentation in regards to identification, cleaning, inspecting, testing, packaging and sterilization, operation of mechanical equipment for instrument cleaning and sterilization, infection control practices and preventative measures and regulatory agencies that govern sterile processing practices. High School diploma or equivalent and one to two years of previous work-related experience are required. Provisional certification is accepted, valid for up to 30 days or once 400 hours of hands-on experience are fulfilled. Certification from a NJDOH-recognized body such as CSPDT/HSPA (Healthcare Sterile Processing Association) is required. Completion and passing grade in an SPD training course or school are acceptable in lieu of one to two years of job experience. Basic math skills, including addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication, are necessary for the role.
