From its beginnings as an orphanage in 1877, St Mary’s has addressed the social, therapeutic and mental health issues of children.
In 1879, St Mary’s became an Incorporated Institution, under the name of St Mary’s Orphanage, governed by a Board of Trustees, with the Bishop of the Diocese as President.
In 1914, while Bishop Greco was a seminarian in Italy, he saw a school where handicapped children were lovingly cared for and from that time he wished to have such a facility in Louisiana.
In 1928, the charter was revised to rename the orphanage, “St Mary’s Home for Children.” St Mary’s has always been a non-profit agency, committed to serving the changing needs of children and families.
But it was not until 1953 that an opportunity presented itself for making the dream a reality when he established St Mary’s Residential School in Clarks, Louisiana.
Founded in 1954 by Bishop Charles P. Greco in Clarks, Louisiana, St Mary’s is a residential facility and home to nearly 200 children and adults that are diagnosed with developmental disabilities.
