Mount St Mary also flowed from these beginnings, opening as an annex to St Joseph’s Hospital in 1941.

On November 6, 1949, St Mary's marked its 25th anniversary with an open house and a Pontifical High Mass of Thanksgiving.

And in 1958, St Mary's broke ground for yet another addition.

Even after the major expansion in 1961, it became quickly evident that OSF St Mary had outgrown its humble beginnings.

In 1965 Mount St Mary became an extended care hospital for patients needing skilled 24 hour a day nursing services and medical supervision but not in need of acute care.

A fund-raising drive aimed at building a new, modern hospital began in 1971.

Since 1973, St Mary Medical Center has met the healthcare needs of the Northwest Indiana community, having started through the ministry of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ.

The new OSF St Mary Medical Center opened in 1974 with a seamless transition that served patients breakfast at the old location and lunch at the new site in the same day.

A new building – the current St Mary – opened on March 26, 1976.

Open heart surgery became a reality in the Tri-State on September 24, 1979, when the first open heart operation was performed in St Mary's new $2.35 million heart unit.

The $13 million facility was licensed for 142 beds and was renamed St Mary Medical Center in 1984.

The Outpatient Procedure Center opened in 1988.

St Mary Regional Cancer Center in 1990.

And on July 18, 1995, St Mary's took a big step in that direction when it broke ground for a new outpatient center.

By July 1997, the outpatient facility was completed and opened its doors providing the community with outpatient surgical and diagnostic services as well as additional physician offices.

November 6, 1999 marked the 75th Anniversary of St Mary's Hospital.

The Joslin Diabetes Center of Boston, an international leader in diagnosing and treating diabetes, opened a center at St Mary's in January 2000.

In 2001, St Mary Medical Center became part of Community Healthcare System, comprised of St Mary Medical Center in Hobart, St Catherine Hospital in East Chicago, and Community Hospital in Munster.

In August 2002, St Mary's Board of Directors and the Pallottine Missionary Sisters agreed that the hospital would be renamed St Mary's Medical Center.

Officially opened in March 2003, the hospital and its staff maintain the values of caring and compassionate care begun by the Sisters.

In 2004, the hospital expanded with a new $40 million Patient Tower offering comfortable, private rooms and advanced bedside technology.

In 2006, Providence St Mary Medical Center completed construction on a new Providence St Mary Regional Cancer Center and Outpatient Procedure Center.

In 2010, an expansion of the OSF Medical Group - Galesburg office, located on the hospital campus, was completed.

The history of Mount St Mary came full circle in November 2012 when fourteen Sisters of St Ann in need of complex care services transferred from St Ann’s Residence upon its closure, and moved in as residents.
