St. Regis Aspen Resort company history timeline

1879

Much of this has happened in the last 20 years, completing the boom-bust-boom cycle that began when a few prospectors found silver nearby in 1879.

1880

In 1880, they changed the name of the place to Aspen.

1888

The Aspen Historical Society maintains several museums, including its flagship in a fine 1888 West End Victorian house built by early Aspen promoter Jerome B. Wheeler who was president of Macy & Co.

1904

St Regis redefined the luxury hotel in 1904, and more than 100 years later this quintessential lifestyle has expanded to more than 40 St Regis Hotels & Resorts around the world.

1912

Astor perished during the sinking of the Titanic on April 15, 1912.

1947

Thanks to the efforts of business people and veterans of the 10th Mountain Division, skiing troops who trained near Aspen, the first ski lift opened on Aspen Mountain in 1947.

1949

The town gained international prominence in 1949 when Chicago businessman Walter Paepcke - a chief architect of Aspen's ascension - joined forces with the University of Chicago to stage a festival marking the 200th anniversary of the birth of German poet and dramatist Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

1950

In 1950, Aspen was the site of an international skiing championship.

1951

After hearing about Aspen through a friend, he arrived in 1951 to find dirt roads, many boarded-up buildings and a growing sense of excitement about what might be.

1954

Melville opened the Mountain Chalet with four rooms around Christmas 1954.

1984

Jerome Wheeler put it up and would likely be pleased to see it since its restoration in 1984, a cozy jewel of a concert hall resplendent with crimson seats, blue walls and deep, reddish wood detail throughout.

2010

St Regis began its Connoisseur program in 2010 with the renowned Argentinian polo star, Nacho Figueras.

2011

The animal art theme continues in the rooms which were designed in 2011 by Rottet Studio who added a series of sweet dog lithographs.
