St. Tammany Parish Public Schools company history timeline

1813

Covington was founded on July 3, 1813 by John Wharton Collins.

1820

In 1820, the first school opened in Covington to fulfill the need for formal education.

1837

Covington Female Academy, founded 17 years later in 1837, was the brainchild of businessman Jesse Jones who realized a need for females to have an education.

1882

The City of Slidell was incorporated in 1882 and named after John Slidell, confederate emissary to England.

1900

There were no provisions made for educating the black children of Slidell until the early 1900's.

At the turn of the century in 1900, Dixon Academy opened on Jahncke Avenue with 200 day students and 35 to 40 boarders.

1903

Saint Scholastica Academy, founded by the St Benedictine sisters, opened in 1903.

1908

On October 16, 1908, the private Board of Trustees of Slidell Colored School, a group of seven men, paid J.A. (Albert) Salmen $125 for property to serve as a home for their school.

1911

In 1911, the Benedictine monks bought Dixon Academy and called the institution St Paul's College.

1913

In 1913, the first public high school opened in Covington.

1920

In the early 1920's, Slidell area African American and Creole families petitioned the school board for school facilities that would house Slidell area students from 4th grade through high school.

1921

In the month of August 1921, the St Tammany Parish Training School for Negroes was in the process of being built.

St Tammany Training School was the first school in St Tammany Parish to accept older colored students. As a result, Slidell Colored School was transformed into St Tammany Training School, which opened in the fall of 1921.

1940

In 1940, a school was opened to serve the African-American children of the area.

1950

The first yearbook was published in 1950.

In the early 1950's, the school's athletic program began to flourish.
