St. Thomas High School company history timeline

1900

The campaign for St Thomas the Apostle began in the mid-1900’s with the design of a master plan that included the renovation of the existing school building, the addition of a new hall, kitchen, new classroom space and subterranean parking.

St Thomas High School was established in 1900 as St Thomas College and housed that year at Franklin Avenue and Caroline Street.

1903

In 1903, when Saint Thomas the Apostle was founded, the Daughters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary undertook the education of the parochial school children, both the girls of girls or grammar and high school, and the boys of the primary school.

In 1903, permanency was assured when Father Roche bought a block of land at Austin and Hadley and constructed Houston's first College Preparatory School for boys.

1930

Through the cooperation and generosity of the parishioners, a state of the art school building was opened for students in 1930 on Fifteenth Street.

1936

As St Thomas Aquinas High School celebrates its 85th year, the school community harkens back to 1936 when St Anthony School enrolled 12 high school students to initiate Catholic secondary education in Broward County.

1940

The shift to the present predominantly Spanish-speaking population began in the 1940’s.

1946

Although boys’ basketball made its debut before football, the young Raiders opened their first football season in 1946.

1952

The newly-named Central Catholic High School moved to its present location in 1952.

1961

In September 1961, the school chose St Thomas Aquinas as its patron and official name.

After the Parish formed in 1961, three Sinsinawa Dominican nuns—Principal Sr.

1963

Amatus (Susanne) Klein—opened the school in September 1963 with only grades 4, 5 and 6.

At the heart of every one of our school’s advancements since 1963—from the development of a full-day preschool and kindergarten programs to up-to-date technology tools and cutting edge collaborative desks and workstations—is innovation.

1965

After solving space constraints, the school expanded to include grades 4-8 in 1965.

1971

In 1971, Principal Sr.

1972

In 1972, Charles Swangren became the first lay principal, and over the next four decades, a selection of dedicated principals shared their unique gifts to shape the school into what it is today, each building on the successes of their predecessor.

1990

Two years later, in 1990, St Thomas School employed a lay principal and an entirely lay faculty for the first time in its history.

1996

In 1996, our community initiated St Thomas School Heritage, a development program to ensure the long-term stability of our great school.

2003

James Rowley Activity Center in 2003, the school utilizes a state-of-the-art gymnasium and its facilities to grow its physical education courses and its award-winning sports programming, as well as host a number of student performances, educational and social events and assemblies.

2018

HSLECJ, later renamed to High School for Law and Justice, moved to its new campus in 2018.

2020

The HSLECJ was named the Joplin Campus, and it opened in 2020.

2022
