St. Vincent's Medical Center company history timeline

1903

The hospital was founded by the Daughters of Charity religious order and incorporated on May 19, 1903.

1905

Its first building had 75 beds and was built at a cost of $250,000. It opened its doors on June 28, 1905; more than 70 patients were treated by the end of that first day.

1941

Move to Current Site In 1941, the sisters opened a second Portland facility on the east side of the Willamette River, the 448-bed Providence Hospital, known today as Providence Portland Medical Center.

1965

On May 19, 1965, administrator Sister Mary Laureen [Rita] Ferschweiler announced that the hospital would move to the Beaverton area on the west edge of Portland.

1971

Construction began shortly thereafter, and on January 31, 1971, the third and current St Vincent Hospital opened its doors.

1976

On Easter Sunday, April 17, 1976, William J. Riordan, president and chief executive officer, directed the transfer of 209 patients from the old St Vincent's Hospital to the new St Vincent's Medical Center, a 440,000 square foot building almost twice the size of the old one.

1979

On August 15, 1979, the Mercy Health – St Vincent Medical Center’s Life Flight went into service making it the first emergency air medical service in Ohio, Michigan and Indiana.

1982

The Sisters of Charity Health System was established in 1982 as the parent corporation for the sponsored ministries of the Sisters of Charity of St Augustine in Ohio and South Carolina.

2000

In just over four hours, with the assistance of military and private ambulances, eighty patients were moved from the Westover Road site and settled into their new rooms.(34) Now known as Providence St Vincent Medical Center, the hospital celebrated its 125th anniversary in July 2000.

2003

In 2003 a $40 million, 70,000 square-foot expansion provided space for ambulatory services, large state-of-the-art operating suites, and a 30-bed intensive care unit.

2010

In 2010, the Medical Center broke ground on the Elizabeth M. Pfriem SWIM Center for Cancer Care, the renovated and expanded Michael J. Daly Emergency Department.
