How would you rate the starting salaries for Staff Accountants, as well as the prospects for salary advancement?

    Richard Brody Ph.D.

    Professor, University of New Mexico

I believe there will be an increase in demand for graduates in accounting in the next five years. However, the demand will be for future professionals who are able to adapt to the needs of their clients and the industries in which they work. Accountants will need some different skills and competencies than their predecessors, in order to be successful and to remain employed. This would include having knowledge and skills in areas such as blockchain, data analytics, and artificial intelligence (we can certainly use the blanket term technology to highlight a more general overall area in which knowledge will be needed).

It should be noted that accounting graduates can pursue jobs in many different areas (e.g., public accounting, corporate accounting, government accounting, tax, internal auditing), and I do not expect the demand to decrease as the need for professional accounting services remains strong, and I believe there will always be a place for a skilled accounting graduate.

Some may feel that the use of AI will eliminate the need for accountants, but I firmly believe that professional judgment is critical now and will remain critical in the future. The role of an accountant may change, in some ways, but human relationships are also important, and those cannot be replaced by a machine.
