Production Responsibilities:
Production Systems & Flow
Design production cells and station models that support agile throughput
Develop SOPs and visual controls for assembly, welding, machining, electrical and QA
Implement build-to-order scheduling with repeatable subassembly kitting
ERP Implementation & Optimization
Define and document BOMs, routings, and workflows
Own production reporting, labor capture, materials movement, and work order control
Train teams and instill daily ERP usage as part of the standard operating cadence
Quality & Deliverability
Build quality gate processes that emphasize prevention and ownership
Improve FPY through checklists, standard work, and structured coaching
Define fit-and-finish expectations; take pride in the shipped product
People & Culture
Collaborate cross-functionally to connect engineering/production and the commercial team, especially related to purchasing/supply chain

Engineering Responsibilities:
Product Design & Documentation Oversight
Review, validate, and improve engineering drawings, EBOMs, and part specs
Ensure all designs are production-ready and align with existing tooling, fixtures, and fabrication capabilities
Collaborate with external resources to iterate on functionality, safety, and cost
Implement drawing release protocols, rev tracking, digital archives, up-to-date spec libraries, part number logic, cut sheets and MBOMs
Producibility & Build Optimization
Simplify builds without compromising performance - reduce welds, consolidate parts, optimize routings
Implement change management for revisions that affect work order planning or field support
Identify and resolve production bottlenecks caused by poor design interfaces or tolerance stacking
Materials & Sourcing Partnership
Evaluate and approve new materials for components based on strength, serviceability, cost, and availability
Participate in vendor development by recommending alternates and spec improvements when appropriate
Ensure operations and commercial team work in tandem for lead-time predictability and supply resilience
Serviceability & Field Reliability Engineering
Use field failure data and technician input to inform design enhancements
Develop SOPs and field service kits based on real-world access, maintenance needs, and wear items
Embed service thinking into every product change - fewer fasteners, clearer diagnostics, modular swap ability
New Product Development Support
Translate product vision into actionable design and production specs
Own the DFM/DFX (Design for Manufacturing, Assembly, and Service) process for all new builds
Pilot new configurations in low-rate builds and iterate toward volume-friendly designs

Qualifications
7+ years of proven experience in product design, driving production processes, and leading a team in an industrial manufacturing environment
Bachelor's degree in a relevant field

Experienced in mechanical, hydraulic, or heavy equipment manufacturing and/or various industrial engineering disciplines
A builder of ERP and manufacturing systems with deep understanding of their functions and limitations, not just a user

Responsibilities
Design and develop deployment systems and associated mechanisms through test and delivery

Experience with the various elements of mechanical design and drafting, including selection of structural materials, adhesive and fastener selection; AMSE y14.5 and other relevant ASME drafting standards; familiarity with ISO 9001/AS9100/MIL Specifications as they apply to aerospace structures
Experience using parametric CAD software to create models of assemblies, parts and drawings.
Experience with SolidWorks and / or Creo skills are preferred, with the ability to quickly achieve proficiency in both CAD packages

Experience
Hands-on experience designing, integrating, and validating machine vision systems in automated manufacturing, including inspection for quality, alignment, and particulate detection.
Proven success selecting, specifying, and implementing vision hardware and software (e.g., Cognex, Keyence, or equivalent) and integrating with automation and control platforms.

Proven ability to lead technical initiatives, manage project deliverables, and apply continuous improvement techniques to enhance inspection reliability, accuracy, and efficiency.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
In-depth understanding of image processing, computer vision, and deep learning principles for object detection, classification, and segmentation.
Working knowledge of PLC and robotic integration, as well as closed-loop control with vision systems for automated inspection and process feedback.
Proficient in MLOps and data management practices, including version control, monitoring, retraining, and deployment of production vision models.
Strong analytical skills with experience using DOE, FMEA, SPC, and Six Sigma methods to validate and continuously improve system performance.
Excellent technical communication and documentation skills; proficient in SolidWorks/PDM, MS Office, and authoring protocols, reports, and procedures.
Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, GMP, and ISO 13485 standards; proactive problem-solver with a demonstrated record of technical leadership and results orientation.

Job Summary
The Lead Design Engineer will lead a team of draftsmen and mechanical engineers to support external customers, internal engineering teams, and shop floor associates in activities ranging from quoting design activities to designing shipping fixtures and internal tooling. This role acts as a support organizational within Petersen for engineering, continuous improvement, and operations teams as a technical resource. Typical activities include:
Collaborating on build plans with focus on design for manufacturability
Reviewing customer prints as part of quoting activities
Designing custom tooling and fixturing for machining and fabrication departments
Creating prints, models, shop drawings, and detail views to support shop floor builds, machine programming, and improve project quality and efficiency
Developing Lifting / rigging plans and tooling to support safe operations
Completing stress tests and analysis of tooling and components
Preparing material specifications and design calculations as required
Supporting customer design requests, clarifications, etc. during job completion
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Leadership:
Experience leading teams of engineering disciplines and/or drafting disciplines
5-10 years as a project engineer or similar discipline with mechanical design experience
2-5 years managing engineers
Review and address active project performance reports and provide direction to engineering staff
Must have strong verbal and written communication skills to communicate both internally with teams composed of shop floor staff up to General Manager and externally with our customers as the face of Petersen Inc.
Promote continuous improvement and training with a focus on quality, accuracy and efficiency
Complete Bi-annual Employee Evaluations for direct reports.
Assist with the enforcement of company policies and procedures
Technical:
Sign-off on final designs and other associated approvals
Supervise, maintain and develop Engineering Standards and product catalog
Must be proficient in blueprint reading, good drafting skills, including geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
Effective math skills including algebra, trigonometry and geometry.
Must be familiar with the design process and specifications leading to construction documents.
Experience with Tooling design and Lifting/Rigging plan design
Experience conducting Stress test and analysis on Tooling and Lift aids
This individual would be the admin for all engineering software
Welding and Machining knowledge is critical
Experience completing design for manufacturability reviews with customers
Experience/Skills
Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
PE Certification Required - Machine design and materials
Project Management Experience
3D CAD Design experience (SolidWorks and ePDM are used at Petersen Inc)
Design experience in machines, tooling, weld cells, and other machine solutions

The Systems Engineer will ensure system reliability and performance, oversee the deployment and maintenance of hardware and software, and contribute to system standards and operational excellence with a focus on best practices.
