Your Role and Responsibilities

You will be part of the core IBM Research Sky Computing team. As a Senior Research Scientist in this team, you will be responsible for directly engaging in our collaboration with UC Berkeley's Sky Computing Lab. The job entails: (1) contributing to and influencing the direction of key projects in the Sky Computing Lab, including but not limited to skypilot; (2) contributing to IBM Research's cloud strategy as it relates to Sky Computing; and (3) helping the IBM Research Sky Computing team in its mission of establishing IBM's mindshare and leadership in the Sky Computing community and successfully connecting our internal cloud buisness priorities with our Sky Lab activities in alignment with our cloud strategy.

The High Performance Chromatography Solutions business develops and supplies innovative instrumentation, software, and consumables to customers across the globe. **What will you do?**

Together with product management and engineering colleagues, work to expand and improve our product portfolio. As a crucial member of the R&D product development team, share in our goal of delighting our customers with outstanding, high quality products.

+ Apply advanced scientific knowledge to evaluate early-stage chromatography hardware and software prototypes.

+ Continuously communicate feedback to R&D colleagues in software development and engineering.

+ Collaborate with team members and align test planning and development with emerging user requirements.

+ Ensure that new product specifications are met by producing high quality test strategies and results.

+ Build positive relationships with product support and operations colleagues to facilitate successful handoff of new products.

+ Provide scientific and technical assistance to colleagues struggling to resolve customer challenges.

**How will you get here?**

**Education/ Experience**

+ Bachelor's or higher-level degree in chemistry or a related field from an accredited institution

+ Demonstrated ability using HPLC in a highly technical environment for at least 7-8 years.

+ Strong understanding of bio-analysis and LC-MS, including method development with triple quadrupole mass spectrometers.

+ Experience with sample preparation and HPLC-MS practices and equipment used in high-throughput laboratory environments.

+ Strong working understanding of chromatography instruments, columns, and basic liquid chromatography theory.

+ Awareness of two-dimensional HPLC strategies for solving tough separations problems.

**Overview**

The Staff Research Scientistspends approximately 80% of their time dedicated to laboratory research and 20% of their time to preparing scientific manuscripts and grant proposals. The incumbent will direct and perform research projects related to the chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) imaging. Additionally, the Staff Research Scientist designs and analyses experiments, prepares manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals, and prepares presentations for national and international meetings.

**Responsibilities**

1. Directs and performs research projects related to chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) imaging. This will include developing new pulse sequences for imaging molecular binding and metabolism as well as data analysis strategies for these methods.

2. Directs and performs research projects to develop methods for the detection of endogenous and exogeneous CEST MRI contrast agents.

3. Analyzes the results of the above experiments and prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals and presentations for national and international scientific meetings.

4. Reports research progress and obstacles to the principal investigator on a daily basis and to other members of the FM Kirby Research Center.

5. Trains, guides and supervises student researchers and junior personnel as necessary.

6. Plays a major role in the Laboratory in developing, writing and submitting proposals to secure funding from NIH as well as private foundations for research projects.

7. Maintains a current knowledge and understanding of the literature relating to MRI and CEST

8. Participates actively in scientific literature review (journal clubs).

**Qualifications**

**QUALIFICATIONS:**

+ Must have portfolio of at least five (5) publications in peer-reviewed journals.

**EDUCATION:**

+ Master's degree in Physics, Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering, or a related discipline is required.

+ PhD preferred.

**EXPERIENCE:**

+ Minimum 5 years of experience in a research setting.

+ Previous supervisory/management experience, particularly supervising graduate students and lab personnel, required.

+ Experience with JCAHO compliance requirements in a research laboratory.

+ Experience performing NMR and MRI experiments.
