Training & Advancement Upon commissioning, Nurses who are new to the Navy are required to attend Officer Development School (ODS) in Newport, RI. For Nursing Students: If you're a nursing student opting to serve full-time in the Navy, you may get up to $34,000 to help pay your way through nursing school through the Nurse Candidate Program (NCP). For Graduate Students: If you're a graduate student enrolled in a postgraduate nursing program in certain nursing specialties and opting to serve part-time in the Navy Reserve, you may qualify for up to $50,000 in nursing school loan repayment assistance. Qualifications & Requirements A degree from a four-year college or university is a minimum educational requirement to become a Commissioned Officer. You must also attend Officer Training. Part-Time Opportunities When serving part-time as a Navy Reserve Nurse, your duties are carried out during your scheduled drilling and training periods. During monthly drilling, Nurse Corps Officers in the Navy Reserve typically work at a location close to their homes. For annual training, you may serve anywhere in the world, including locations in the U.S., at bases overseas, or in areas where humanitarian needs are great. The basic Navy Reserve commitment involves training a minimum of one weekend a month (referred to as drilling) and two weeks a year (referred to as Annual Training) - or the equivalent of that.
