Prior to, Charlie served as CEO and Chairman of WS Packaging Group, one of the largest printing and label converting operators in North America. W/S operates 17 manufacturing plants and produces high quality packaging products doing business worldwide. In Feb of '18 the company was sold to Platinum Equity.

From Nov '09 until Mar '14, Charlie and Jeff Armstrong operated a consulting practice providing hands on operating and financial guidance to middle market firms known as Eitel & Armstrong (E&A). During that period, Charlie served as interim CEO of 3 companies.

Before E&A, Charlie served as Vice Chair of the Board of Simmons Bedding Company, an Atlanta-based manufacturer of mattresses, from Oct '08 to Dec '09. He served as Chairman and CEO of Simmons from Jan '00 until his appointment to Vice Chair in '08. During Charlie's tenure, Simmons employed over 3,000 associates in NA and operated 20 manufacturing plants. During Charlie’s 9 yrs at Simmons net sales doubled and income tripled.

Over the course of his career, Charlie held leadership positions with Interface, Inc. (Pres. and COO), and Collins & Aikman Floorcoverings, Inc. (Pres and CEO).

Currently, Charlie serves on the Board of Directors of Duke Realty Corporation (NYSE: DRE), American Fidelity Assurance Company and is a former board member of Mattress Firm Holding Corp.

Charlie is active in many civic and professional organizations, including World Presidents’ Organization and “Points of Light Foundation” where he worked with President George H.W. Bush to promote the spirit of volunteerism. He is former Chairman of International Sleep Products Association. He was honored by the City of Hope with the Spirit of Life Award in 2004. In 2008, Charlie was named the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award for Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee in the Consumer Products Category.

Charlie is the author of two books, Eitel Time: Turnaround Secrets, '95, and Mapping Your Legacy: A Hook It Up Journey, '98. Also, in print is 84 Quotes, which is a pocked-size booklet of value quotes by Charlie. His successful turnaround of Simmons Bedding Company is featured in a four-part Harvard Business School Case Study “Leading Change at Simmons” and is taught at several business schools around the country.
