Standard Publishing company history timeline

1866

The first issue came off the press dated April 7, 1866.

Started in 1866, Standard is one of the premier publishers of Christian curriculum, Vacation Bible School products and Children’s books.

1869

In 1869, he partnered with R. W. Carroll, a printer and publisher, in Cincinnati, Ohio.

1872

In 1872, Standard Publishing was formed.

1873

After formation of the International Sunday School Lessons by the American Sunday School Union, the first Uniform Lessons appeared in Christian Standard in 1873.

1888

Young People’s Standard was created to serve the Christian Endeavor movement, founded in 1888.

Our publication began in 1888.

1894

On March 10, 1894, the name of the journal was changed to The Lookout.

1923

In 1923 Standard Publishing became the first publisher of Vacation Bible School (VBS) materials with a five-week, all-day program.

1955

In 1955 the Errett family sold the business to John Bolten Sr.

1964

In late 1964 it started selling stock to the public through the New York Stock Exchange.

1980

He began working in marketing at Procter & Gamble in 1980.

1991

Beginning in 1991, he served as Vice President of Marketing for Ingram Micro, the world’s largest distributor of computer hardware and software.

1994

Returning to Ingram Book Company in 1994, Carpenter became President of Ingram Christian Resources.

1997

In 1997, when Ingram purchased Spring Arbor, the nation’s largest Christian products wholesale distributor, Carpenter was promoted to President and CEO.

1999

In 1999, Carpenter left Ingram to start his own company.

2005

By 2005, FaithWorks represented over 300 Christian publishers with 1,200 authors and over 5,000 titles.

2007

In 2007, Standard Publishing moved from its historic facilities to modern offices on the north side of Cincinnati.

In 2007, Carpenter left STL Distribution to become Vice President of Marketing for Non-Fiction Books for Thomas Nelson Publishing.

2008

In 2008, Carpenter accepted the position of President and Publisher of Standard Publishing.

2010

In May of 2010, Carpenter stepped down as President of Standard Book to start his own company, Christian Book Services.

2015

In December 2015, the publishing company changed its corporate name to Christian Standard Media, LLC, which continues to publish The Lookout and Christian Standard as its flagship publications and continues to be a trustworthy Christian ministry partner in a rapidly changing world.

In 2015, the company sold its Standard Lesson Bible Commentary, Study Bibles and HeartShaper Sunday school curriculum to David C Cook.
