Department/Program Description: Big Local News, situated in the journalism program in the Department of Communication at Stanford, allows journalists - whether freelancers, reporters from one company or collaborators across multiple news organizations - to share data and work together as they report out stories. Our work is designed to be journalist-driven and transformative, to help find solutions for local newsrooms' ability to produce accountability journalism and create impact. The Stanford Journalism program's mission is to serve the public's need for facts in a just, self-governed society. We develop tools to make it easier to discover important stories and lower the cost of accountability journalism through better use of data and algorithms. Position Summary: The Department of Communication is seeking a Data Analyst 1. The Data Analyst 1 will work under general supervision of the director of Big Local News within the department and conduct data collection, analysis and training in service of Big Local News' mission of supporting local journalism and partnering where applicable with researchers on data analyses for that purpose. This is a 95% FTE, 2-year fixed-term exempt position. This position will be based on the Stanford campus and will be considered for an option of telecommuting (hybrid of working on-site and off-site), subject to operational need. Assess and produce relevant, standard, or custom information (reports, charts, graphs and tables) from structured data sources by querying data repositories and generating the associated information. * Collect, manage and clean datasets using an extraction and reporting programming language to ensure data integrity. * Research and reconcile data discrepancies occurring among various information systems and reports. * Collaborate with data managers to define and implement data standards and common data elements for data collection. * Identify new sources of data and methods to improve data collection, analysis and reporting. * Serve as a resource for non-routine inquiries such as requests for statistics or surveys. * Lead the implementation of data standards and common data elements for data collection. * Collaborate with technical staff to standardize and systemize routine reports, dashboards, and metrics. * Other duties may also be assigned. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree and one year of experience or a combination of education and relevant experience. Experience in a quantitative discipline such as economics, finance, statistics, or engineering. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: * Basic knowledge and demonstrated experience using and applying analytical software, database management system software, database reporting software, database user interface and query software, and data mining software. * Ability to collect data using a variety of methods, such as data mining and hardcopy or electronic documentation study, to improve or expand databases. * Strong listening, verbal and written communication skills. * Ability to manage multiple activities in a deadline-oriented environment; highly organized, flexible and rigorous attention to detail. * Ability to use logic to calculate data; efficiently construct a database or scrutinize the form of a question. * Ability to work with data of varying levels of quality and validity. * Demonstrated ability to produce data in a clear and understandable manner meeting user requirements. * Ability to work effectively with multiple internal and external customers. The Research Data Scientist will play a critical role in this initiative, leveraging their expertise in computational research to develop and optimize workflows and applications that unlock Marlowe's capabilities. This role requires a deep understanding of computational and data science, machine learning, and the scientific process. It also demands the ability to leverage high-performance GPU computing to efficiently process and analyze large datasets. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with Stanford faculty and research groups to design, implement, and refine GPU-accelerated data processing pipelines. They will also contribute to scientific codes using machine learning, statistical analysis, and computation to address complex research challenges. Additionally, the data scientist will contribute to the development of novel computational methods ranging from biological data analysis to simulation of physical systems via digital twins. The Data Analyst will be responsible for working with research staff both internationally and domestically, managing data collection and performing data analyses for one or more research projects (current major projects are described below). Current Major Projects Rapid Research in Diagnostics Development for TB Network (R2D2 TB Network) - This NIH U01-funded project has established a platform for identifying promising early-stage diagnostics from a broad range of product developers and conducting field evaluations in TB endemic countries to advance their development and evaluate their accuracy, usability/acceptability and costs/cost-effectiveness. The project involves field sites in multiple countries, including Uganda, Zambia, Vietnam, India, and the Philippines. Skills of interest include international field site management, data management and human factors research. As desired, the project provides opportunities to be involved in Bayesian analytic methods and health economic studies. The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. POSITION SUMMARY RAPID began as a program of two national surveys of households with children under age 6 and the child care workforce. Led by Philip Fisher, Stanford Center on Early Childhood Director, the RAPID National Survey administers monthly surveys on a rapid-cycle schedule, and has collected data from more than 20,000 households and 12,000 child care providers in all 50 states. The survey and data inform policy, advocacy, academic, parent and practitioner audiences on the experiences, challenges, and strengths of parents of young children and child care providers. The goal is to support parent- and provider-driven policies and programs that equitably and effectively serve families, providers, and young children. RAPID is now implemented in community, state, and national contexts, working in partnership with local and state organizations. The RAPID datasets are extensive and quickly growing, and include both quantitative and qualitative data. The Data Scientist will oversee analyses of all data collected by the RAPID Survey Project. The person in this role will provide oversight and guidance to the RAPID Data Analysts, help strengthen the research process, and review and ensure accuracy and quality of data products. They will guide analysts through review, reflection, and constructive feedback on analytic approaches and outputs and provide final sign-off to ensure the team's work is rigorous, reliable, and high quality. The Data Scientist will be a resource in the production of data dissemination products, such as visualizations, fact sheets, and data briefs. The Data Scientist will maintain rigorous methodological standards, review work, support analysts, and strengthen both the quality of individual products and the skills of the research team. The successful candidate will bring extensive methodological experience, technical skill with analysis tools and software, and content knowledge in early childhood development, education, policy, and/or advocacy. While this role will provide oversight and mentorship, it will not include direct supervision. The Data Scientist will work independently and with minimal supervision under the direction of the Director of the RAPID Survey Project and in collaboration with RAPID Program Managers. The Neuromuscular Division of Neurology is seeking a Research Data Analyst (RDA), with clinical data management experience to utilize knowledge from research tools to conduct and analyze research data assuring efficiency and regulatory compliance; collect, compile and perform statistical analysis, data reports and management. Some of our partners include the EPA, IRS, DOL, and Santa Clara County Public Health.** **As a Data Scientist, you will:** + **Support collecting, managing, and cleaning of data sets from regulatory agencies, understand discrepancies and build out and document a data dictionary to improve knowledge of different systems and how to manage discrepancies.** + **Produce reports and publications on findings to our government partners and for academic publications, based on extensive data analysis.** + **Work with PI and Research Director to ensure data management/collection is clear, secure, and robust; improve processes for collecting and managing data.** + **Support training of research fellows on best practices and technical skills** **Core Duties:** + **Identify and select usable data from subtle and complex data patterns. Assess and produce relevant, standard, or custom information (reports, charts, graphs and tables) from structured data sources by querying data repositories and generating the associated information.** + **Design methods to validate data to ensure high quality product. Explore creative approach to using data based on technical expertise of available data. Distribute reports to applicable agencies, researchers, management and other internal end-users and provide interpretation of data when needed.** + **Collect, manage and clean datasets using an extraction and reporting programming language to ensure data integrity.** + **Research and reconcile data discrepancies occurring among various information systems and reports.** + **Collaborate with data managers to define and implement data standards and common data elements for data collection.** + **Identify new sources of data and methods to improve data collection, analysis and reporting.** + **May test prototype software and participate in approval and release process for new software.** + **Other duties as assigned** **.** **Minimum Requirements:** **This is a one-year fixed term position, with the option of renewal.** **Education & Experience:** **Bachelor's degree or a combination of education and relevant experience.
