Design is central to all branches of engineering, contributing cross-disciplinary methods for framing and refining a design problem, generating novel approaches, and evaluating candidate solutions. Modern perspectives in design have moved beyond solely functional requirements to include stakeholder need-finding, socio-technical constraints, and attention to ethics and societal implications.
We invite applications from individuals who are pursuing research at the intersection of design and engineering, especially in the following modes: research into design (the study of how people design new artifacts, systems, or organizations), research for design (tools and methods to support designers and engineers, including interactive, computational, and optimization techniques), and research through design (applying the design process to understand and create novel outcomes). Candidates can be conducting this work in the context of any engineering discipline.
Successful candidates should be conducting world-class research and translating their results into real-world impact in their domain, or in the case of junior candidates, have demonstrated potential to do so. In addition to excellence in research, we expect candidates to be or become leaders in design engineering education, and to effectively communicate the role of design in shaping technology, including considering its impacts. A successful candidate will be expected to teach courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels and to build and lead a team of graduate students in Ph.D. research.
Applicants must have completed, or be completing, a Ph.D. in the engineering field in which they apply their work, or a closely related one.

A significant research commitment is part of the job description. Responsibilities of the new faculty will include clinical interpretation of all aspects of Nuclear Medicine, including SPECT and PET, as well as participation in the Nuclear Medicine therapy service. The Division of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging has state-of-the-art SPECT-CT, PET-CT and PET-MRI scanners, as well as a Theragnostics Clinic. Dedicated targeted radionuclide therapy rooms are also available in the hospital for inpatient stays. We are seeking a candidate who will run an active wet lab with a focus on developing translational molecular imaging strategies.
The successful candidate will also be expected to teach medical students, residents, and fellows in radiology. Candidates must be board-certified or board-eligible in nuclear medicine and have demonstrated or shown potential for an outstanding track record of research productivity. The qualified candidate must have a M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. or equivalent.

The Department of Radiology at Stanford School of Medicine is recruiting a full-time faculty member at the level of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor to join the Integrative Biomedical Imaging Informatics at Stanford (IBIIS) Division. IBIIS faculty focus on pioneering, translating, teaching and disseminating methods in data science that integrate imaging, clinical, and -omics data to better understand the molecular mechanisms of diseases and to improve the accuracy and efficiency of clinical care. The new faculty will lead an innovative research program developing, translating, benchmarking, and validating AI and other data science methods to improve the practice of radiology by characterizing, reconstructing, enhancing, segmenting, classifying and/or interpreting medical images, and linking them to other imaging (e.g., pathology, ophthalmology, -omics), clinical, biological and -omics data. Such integration of imaging with other clinical data could one day enable real-time decision support for early detection of disease, more accurate diagnosis, tailored planning of treatment, precise outcome prediction and other capabilities.
The qualified candidate will have a PhD in computer science, engineering, physics, biomedical informatics, data science, imaging science, or another related field, or an MD. We are particularly interested in candidates who have demonstrated expertise in AI, machine learning and other data science approaches that improve the practice of radiology for some or all of the following: (a) detection of disease and classification of patient data in near real-time, (b) reconstruction, de-noising, and/or otherwise enhancing images, (c) analyzing massive data sets containing both images and non-imaging data sources, (d) creating systems that employ image data to assist human decision makers, (e) developing data resources and tools that catalyze discovery, and (f) rigorously validating AI models pre- and post-deployment to ensure high performance and health equity.

The Neuroradiology Division consists of an experienced and world-renowned faculty specializing in interpreting imaging studies of the brain, spine, and head and neck, in performing image-guided procedures and biopsies of the spine and head and neck, and in neurointervention. We offer minimally-invasive treatment of cerebral aneurysms and other cerebral vascular malformations, stenting of carotid arteries, vertebroplasty, and transvenous embolization of CSF fistulae, as well as urgent stroke management services. We have developed a unique expertise in advanced neuroimaging techniques including dual-energy CT, functional MRI, diffusion tensor imaging and tractography, and CT and MR perfusion imaging, including non-contrast methods such as arterial spin label perfusion. We have an active focus on brain “stress testing,” using advanced blood flow imaging with pharmacological challenge to evaluate cerebrovascular reserve. As part of a Comprehensive Certified Stroke Center, we offer rapid, dedicated stroke MR and CT vascular and perfusion imaging to differentiate between completed stroke and at-risk tissue. We offer additional advanced imaging services specifically tailored to support our colleagues in multiple clinical specialties, to support a busy Emergency Department, and as part of Level 1 Trauma Center care.
Stanford Hospital & Clinics has expanded its hospital facilities to accommodate new medical technology and increased capacity needs. The new facilities feature private patient rooms, an enlarged Level-1 trauma center and Emergency Department, and new surgical, diagnostic and treatment rooms. Lucile Packard Children's Hospital also expanded in order to meet growing community needs for specialized pediatric and obstetric care. The expansion provides patients and doctors with the most modern clinical advancements and technology to address the specialized needs of patients and their families. The PACT program provides comprehensive care to children with all stages of heart failure. We perform approximately 25 heart transplants and 15 VAD implants annually, with a complex mix of patients. The Neuroradiology Division consists of an experienced and world-renowned faculty specializing in interpreting imaging studies of the brain, spine, and head and neck, in performing image-guided procedures and biopsies of the spine and head and neck, and in neurointervention. We offer minimally-invasive treatment of cerebral aneurysms and other cerebral vascular malformations, stenting of carotid arteries, vertebroplasty, and transvenous embolization of CSF fistulae, as well as urgent stroke management services. We have developed a unique expertise in advanced neuroimaging techniques including dual-energy CT, functional MRI, diffusion tensor imaging and tractography, and CT and MR perfusion imaging, including non-contrast methods such as arterial spin label perfusion. We have an active focus on brain "stress testing," using advanced blood flow imaging with pharmacological challenge to evaluate cerebrovascular reserve. As part of a Comprehensive Certified Stroke Center, we offer rapid, dedicated stroke MR and CT vascular and perfusion imaging to differentiate between completed stroke and at-risk tissue. We offer additional advanced imaging services specifically tailored to support our colleagues in multiple clinical specialties, to support a busy Emergency Department, and as part of Level 1 Trauma Center care.
Stanford Hospital & Clinics has expanded its hospital facilities to accommodate new medical technology and increased capacity needs. The new facilities feature private patient rooms, an enlarged Level-1 trauma center and Emergency Department, and new surgical, diagnostic and treatment rooms. Lucile Packard Children's Hospital also expanded in order to meet growing community needs for specialized pediatric and obstetric care. The expansion provides patients and doctors with the most modern clinical advancements and technology to address the specialized needs of patients and their families. Multiple outpatient sites offer routine advanced imaging technologies and provide facilities for outpatient fluoroscopic- and CT-guided procedures. The Department of Bioengineering at Stanford University ( *********************************** ) and the Arc Institute ( ************************ ) invite applications for a faculty position at the ranks of tenured Associate or Full Professor in the University Tenure Line.
This is a coordinated search between Stanford and the Arc Institute. The Arc Institute is a nonprofit research organization founded on the belief that many important scientific programs can be enabled by new organizational models. Arc operates in partnership with Stanford University, UCSF, and UC Berkeley, and fully funds its Core Investigators with renewable, eight-year appointments to provide complete freedom to pursue curiosity-driven research agendas at its new research facilities. Arc Institute Core Investigators have their lab space located at Arc Headquarters in the Stanford Research Park in Palo Alto, California.
For this joint appointment, Bioengineering and Arc are conducting independent search processes and candidates will be evaluated and selected by both committees. Two separate applications are required (see below). The successful candidate will hold a Stanford Bioengineering appointment with all rights and privileges afforded Bioengineering faculty. In addition, the individual, as an Arc Core Investigator, will have office and research space with the Arc Institute, and receive all rights and privileges afforded by the Arc Institute, including annual funding. Together, the Arc Institute and Stanford Bioengineering particularly encourage candidates with a strong track-record of exceptional contributions in the development, translation, and application of innovative concepts, tools, or methodologies in bioengineering. This search has a particular focus in immunology, neuroscience, and/or computational science/machine learning. That said, we give high priority to the overall originality and promise of the candidate's work, and encourage applications from individuals representing disciplines or opportunities that are not yet well-established within bioengineering, broadly defined. In addition to their scholarly research, the successful candidate will be expected to train the next generation of biomedical revolutionaries in their area.
Applicants should possess an earned Ph.D., D.Sc., and/or M.D. and have demonstrated the ability to pursue an independent research program. A strong commitment to both graduate and undergraduate teaching is required, as well as the ability to initiate and conduct research across disciplines. A successful candidate will be expected to teach courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels and to build and lead a team of graduate students in Ph.D. research. Ideal candidates should also demonstrate strong communication and leadership skills, as well as an ability to contribute actively to a rapidly growing Stanford Department.
