Star Group company history timeline

1990

In early 1990, GP Group purchased the Star, National Enquirer's rival publication, from Rupert Murdoch's New America Publishing Inc. for $400 million in cash and stocks.

1991

The Enquirer/Star Group went public in July 1991, with an initial offering of 13 million shares of Class A Stock.

1993

In 1993, the company entered into a joint venture with Brandon Tartikoff (former chairman of Paramount Studios) to begin production of a one-hour television program produced by the staff of the Weekly World News to be aired on network television.

Net income grew by 15 percent to $19.4 million in 1993.

2014

In June 2014, the company led by David Baazov agreed to buy the parent company of PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker, owned by Isai and Mark Scheinberg, for $4.9 billion borrowing $3 billion for the deal.

2016

In March 2016, following charges by Canadian regulators with multiple securities fraud charges, he took an indefinite leave of absence, and resigned in August.

On December 20, 2016, Baazov dropped a bid to buy the company with a "virtually unknown" group of outside investors, one of whom denied being involved.

2017

On August 1, 2017, the company changed its name to The Stars Group Inc.

Star Group, is a limited partnership that has approved an election to be treated as a corporation for United States federal income tax purposes effective November 1, 2017.

2018

In April 2018, the company acquired UK-focused Sky Betting & Gaming for cash and stock worth $4.7 billion.

2019

On October 2, 2019, Flutter Entertainment announced an agreement to acquire The Stars Group for $6 billion.

2020

The sale of The Stars Group to Flutter was completed on May 5, 2020.
