Summary
While upholding the Star Valley Health mission, vision, and values this key position is responsible for providing exceptional patient care by leading and coordinating OB nursing services. This is an at will position.
Job Duties
Provide nursing care to the laboring, c-section, and postpartum patient. Ability to conduct antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum assessments.
Schedule c-sections and inductions of labor by communicating with OB provider, assistant, pediatric provider, and OR.
Ability to assess neonate at delivery and perform neonatal resuscitation according to AHA/AAP guidelines.
Ability to adequately assess and reassess pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques. Educates the patient and family regarding pain management.
Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
Ability to formulate an individualized plan of care, revise plan as indicted by the patient's response to treatment and evaluate overall plan daily for effectiveness.
Demonstrates knowledge of fetal monitoring. Identifies FHR patterns and treats appropriately.
Communicates appropriately and clearly to charge nurse, coworkers and physicians.
Consults other departments as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient's needs.
Demonstrates an ability to assist physicians with procedures in Labor and Delivery, Postpartum and Newborn Nursery.
Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families.
Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.
Participates in performance improvement activities.
Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.
Actively participate on OB Committee.
Coordinates core OB nurse education by arranging for training, developing didactic training, and leading regular emergency drills (hemorrhage, emergency c-section, dystocia, neonatal resuscitation, etc.)
Educates patients and family members at prenatal class's quarterly.
Manages the core OB nursing staff by assessing nursing competencies, evaluating ongoing performance, and managing performance problems.
Manages the equipment and supplies in the OB department by purchasing, ordering, and stocking supplies.
Reports to the state regarding vaccinations, hearing screens, PKU tests, birth certificates, and birth announcements.
Develops an awareness of community resources and directs families to those resources in discharge planning (WIC, Best Beginnings, Parents as Teachers, etc.)
Manages the informatics pertaining to the OB division. Becomes an OBIX administrator and runs OBIX audits.
Liaison for the OB department with Meditech.
Supervise and delegate tasks to CNA and other staff as needed for patient care.
Attend department and other facility meetings as scheduled.
Perform other duties as assigned and needs arise.

Proficiency or ability to become proficient as a surgical tech in an emergency c-section setting.

Hearing: Adequate to perform job duties in person and over the telephone. Able to use stethoscope and respond to verbal questions.
Speaking: Must be able to communicate clearly to patients in person and over the telephone.
Vision: Visual acuity adequate to perform job duties, including visual examination of patient and reading information printed sources and computer screen.
Other: Requires frequent lifting and carrying items weighting up to 50 pounds unassisted, including assisting patients when required. Adequate physician ability including sufficient manual dexterity to perform the requisite healthcare service, including injections. Requires frequent bending, reaching, repetitive hand movements, standing, walking, squatting and sitting, with some heavy lifting, pushing and pulling exerted regularly throughout a regular work shift. Requires exposure to communicable diseases and/or bodily fluids.

Experience & Education:
Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing program
Active Wyoming licensure
1 year of OB experience preferred.
Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) is required.
Current ACLS Certification-Or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
Current PALS Certification- Or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
Current NRP Certification- Or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
Computer literate; experience with Meditech and Obix a plus.
Utilization of an automatic medication dispensing system helpful.

Here Is What You Will Be Doing:
Completes nursing assessment of patient and documents appropriately into patient chart.
Develops and reviews and revises a plan of care, including a discharge plan, based upon the assessment of patient's needs.
Implements medical and nursing orders per plan of care and documents appropriately.
Evaluates patient's response to care and engages in patient and family teaching as appropriate.
Oversees staff (LPN, CNA, and PSA) assigned for providing patient care.
Participates in Bedside Shift Report.
Collaborates with the Clinical Nurse Manager to assure the integration of the ANA's Scope & Standards of Practice, assuring that these standards are identified as the measurement criteria for nursing practice on the unit.
Coordinates patient care in collaboration with providers and ancillary departments to achieve quality outcomes.
Completes Unit specific orientation and ongoing training and competencies as assigned based on department role, scope of services, and organizational standards.
Desired Skills:
Demonstrates effective leadership and professional/clinical skills according to Standards of Care, to include drug calculations.
Ability to assess a patient's condition
Ability to utilize critical thinking to formulate plan of care, select appropriate interventions, and evaluate patient's response to plan of care and problem solve as needed.
