The salary for this position is $24.00/hour/$1,920.00 bi-weekly/$49,920.00 annual.

CORRECTIONALOFFICER JOB DUTIES:
As part of a multi-disciplinary team, observes incarcerated individual behavior/interaction with staff, other incarcerated individuals, and visitors; communicates and documents observations to ensure effective security and consistent application of incarcerated individual change principles.
Continuously interacts with incarcerated individuals, utilizing behavioral techniques to assist in the development of problem-solving skills, facilitating behavior change, role-playing, effective disapproval, providing positive reinforcement when appropriate, and instituting corrective measures through the effective use of disapproval.
Patrols facilities and makes security checks; conducts rounds and incarcerated individual counts; inspects all areas of the institution and grounds for safety/security deficiencies.
Conducts searches of incarcerated individuals, vehicles, packages, equipment, incarcerated individuals' cells and property for contraband items. With a balanced approach, instructs incarcerated individuals in rules, policy, procedure, expectations, and assists incarcerated individuals in the development of attitudes and skills necessary for successful adaptation to life within an institution and a pro-social lifestyle.
Escorts incarcerated individuals, visitors, and staff inside/outside of the institution and verifies possession of appropriate passes or legal documents. Interacts with the general public, visitors, and victims in person or via phone.
Provides information, security, and assistance. Role models pro-social behaviors that convey dignity and respect for others and acknowledge that incarcerated individuals can change their lives by development of skills and the adoption of pro-social attitudes and behaviors.
Maintains logs, prepares reports, and enters information into the Department of Corrections electronic record system. Supervises incarcerated individual work assignments and evaluates work performance.
Operates electronic doors, telephone systems, two-way radios, intercom, alarm systems, closed circuit TV systems, personal data assistants, computer terminals, and weapons/incarcerated individual control devices.
Attends training and professional development classes.

How You Will Make an Impact
Perform inmate head counts, cell checks, and searches. Monitor, log, and supervise inmate movement, recreation, visitations, cleaning, laundry, and security checks. Receive and release inmates by completing paperwork, fingerprinting, photographing, data entry, and conducting checks for outstanding warrants, protection orders, etc. Log and manage inmate property, money, and supplies. Exercise appropriate use of force and self-defense tactics to restrain disorderly inmates and deescalate volatile situations. Operate and maintain radios, telephones, and other communication equipment. Operate doors and intercoms and perform security checks of the perimeter, buildings, and grounds. Answer phones and assist callers with questions and concerns. Answer inmate questions and concerns and assist inmates with paperwork as necessary. Prepare and complete reports.
What You Need to Succeed in this Role
High school diploma or GED and one year of relevant work experience. Comparable combination of education and work experience may be considered. Must pass a written examination. Must possess a valid driver's license and maintain a safe driving record with Minnehaha County. Must successfully complete pre-employment background process. Ability to make appropriate decisions quickly and with tact and impartiality. Ability to learn and apply the policies and procedures of law enforcement operations. Must maintain ability to be a credible witness in court. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public. Ability to maintain a professional appearance and demeanor.
Though not required to be considered for a position, an associate's or bachelor's degree in criminal justice or a related field, experience working in corrections, and knowledge of legal terminology is a plus.

How You Will Make an Impact
Perform inmate head counts, cell checks, and searches. Monitor, log, and supervise inmate movement, recreation, visitations, cleaning, laundry, and security checks. Receive and release inmates by completing paperwork, fingerprinting, photographing, data entry, and conducting checks for outstanding warrants, protection orders, etc. Log and manage inmate property, money, and supplies. Exercise appropriate use of force and self-defense tactics to restrain disorderly inmates and deescalate volatile situations. Operate and maintain radios, telephones, and other communication equipment. Operate doors and intercoms and perform security checks of the perimeter, buildings, and grounds. Answer phones and assist callers with questions and concerns. Answer inmate questions and concerns and assist inmates with paperwork as necessary. Prepare and complete reports.
What You Need to Succeed in this Role
High school diploma or GED and one year of relevant work experience. Comparable combination of education and work experience may be considered. Must pass a written examination. Must possess a valid driver's license and maintain a safe driving record with Minnehaha County. Must successfully complete pre-employment background process. Ability to make appropriate decisions quickly and with tact and impartiality. Ability to learn and apply the policies and procedures of law enforcement operations. Must maintain ability to be a credible witness in court. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. General Medical Requirements: As determined by OPM the duties of this position require moderate to arduous physical exertion involving walking and standing, use of firearms, and exposure to inclement weather. Manual dexterity with comparatively free motion of fingers, wrist, elbows, shoulders, hips and knee joints is required. * Recruitment Incentive: Applicants may be eligible for a $40,000 recruitment incentive in accordance with regulatory requirements. The first installment of $15,000 will be paid following successful completion of Secret Service Criminal Investigator training. A second installment of $10,000 will be paid following one year of service post training and an acceptable performance rating. The final installment of $15,000 will be paid after a third year of service post training and an acceptable performance rating. Provision of these payments require the execution of a three-year Continued Service Agreement (CSA) with the agency. Newly hired employees who resign from the USSS prior to the expiration of the CSA will be required to repay the recruitment incentive. This is a temporary, non-sworn position. POC's are expected to apply separately for openings within the Iowa Department of Public Safety during the next applicable academy hiring process. As a Peace Officer Candidate, you will be given up to four opportunities to seek employment as a Certified Peace Officer with the Iowa Department of Public Safety. If you are unsuccessful after four attempts at being accepted into the DPS Academy, you will be asked to resign your position as a Peace Officer Candidate.
The DPS Academy hiring process will include the following:
• Physical Fitness Testing (1.5 mile run, sit-ups, push-ups and sit and reach)
• Oral Board (interview)
• Written Test (grammar, spelling, mathematics, writing, etc.)
• Completion of a Polygraph
• Psychological and Medical Evaluations
• Extensive Background Investigation
* Employment as a Peace Officer Candidate does not guarantee your entrance into the DPS Academy.
Additional Requirements:
* Candidates must successfully pass a comprehensive background investigation conducted by the Iowa Department of Public Safety investigators before a final letter of employment offer is delivered.
* This is not a remote position.

For additional information, please click on this link to view the job description.All applicants must be eligible for enrollment in the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy training program. Screening for the Academy includes:
a) Thorough background investigation and evaluation (including fingerprint searches) for substance abuse, or arrest and conviction records that indicate an individual could not serve effectively as a peace officer.
b) Physical examination and agility test to assure that an individual is free from conditions which might adversely affect the performance of duties (drug screens included).
c) Vision exam requiring uncorrected vision of not less than 20/100 correctable to 20/20 with normal color vision.
d) Hearing exam with a loss not exceeding a 25-decibel average in either ear at 1,000, 2,000 and 3,000 cycles.
e) Battery of psychological exams to determine that the individual meets the minimum standards for mental fitness required for a law enforcement officer.
f) Oral Board and Polygraph review.
g) Age - applicants must be at least 18 years of age. All applicants must be United States citizens but need not be Iowa residents at the time of application.
Applicants must successfully complete and graduate from the Departmental Academy.
Positions in this class are exempt from the screening and referral requirements of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services - Human Resources Enterprise. Interested parties should apply directly to the Department of Public Safety.
