1812

From their base at Pensacola, the British employed (or otherwise persuaded) Native Americans to harass United States settlements during the War of 1812.

1817

It was the First Seminole War (1817–18), however, that marked the beginning of armed conflict between Native Americans in Florida and the United States government.

1818

Andrew Jackson captured Pensacola in 1818.

1824

In 1824, Tallahassee was established as the territorial capital, midway between St Augustine and Pensacola, which had been the capitals in East and West Florida.

1834

William Duval elected Florida's first non-military governor; serves until 1834.

1845

The Act establishing statehood for Iowa and Florida was approved on March 3, 1845 by the second session of the 28th Congress.

1861

Floridians were in the Union only 16 years before they voted to secede and join the Confederacy on January 10, 1861.

1865

In fact it wasn't until after the United States Civil War ended in 1865 that things began to happen in our fair state.

1867

New state seal created to correct inaccuracies dating back to 1868.

1879

Florida Memorial University was founded in 1879 as the Florida Baptist Institute in Live Oak, Florida.

1912

Start of construction of Henry Flagler's railroad to Key West; opens in 1912.

1918

1918 Florida votes to ratify the 18th Amendment to the Constitution, which prohibited the purchase and consumption of alcohol.

1926

Florida's economic bubble burst in 1926, when money and credit ran out, and banks and investors abruptly stopped trusting the "paper" millionaires.

1933

Developer Henry Plant opens the Tampa Bay Hotel (after 1933, the University of Tampa).

1957

Starting in 1957, Florida's Cape Canaveral became the major launching site for manned space flights, intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), and satellites as the United States entered the space race.

1960

Nathan Mayo elected Commissioner of Agriculture; becomes Florida's longest serving public servant (37 years - died in office in 1960).

1961

Florida also served as the launching point for the ill-fated Bay of Pigs Invasion in 1961, and as the airbase for reconnaissance planes that first photographed nuclear missile silos in Cuba that nearly started a war between the United States and Russia.

1969

On July 20, 1969, the world saw live television coverage of the first landing of men on the moon, a feat that began at Cape Canaveral with the launching of Apollo XI.

1971

Walt Disney World opened in 1971.

1972

The 1972 Miami Dolphins play a perfect season, winning every game they played that year, including the Super Bowl.

1980

Following the Communist takeover of Cuba, hundreds of thousands of refugees under the auspices of federal programs such as Operation Pedro Pan (Peter Pan) came to Miami, followed later by other refugees during the Mariel Boatlift in 1980.

1982

Old Capitol saved from destruction; opens as museum in 1982.

1987

These remains, including a coin and bits of chain mail, were found by state archaeologists in 1987.

2008

Continuous economic growth lasted until about 2008.

2009

The first year in which population did not increase was 2009.
