The effects of the Great Depression, however, caused their company to fail in 1933.
After Jack worked that summer of 1933, Sam decided he couldn’t afford to do without him.
In between working, Jack managed to complete his senior year of high school in Manhattan and graduated in 1934.
Through long hours of very hard work, the company was firmly established by the summer of 1935, and the rest of Sam’s family was able to join him in Manhattan.
When Sam Goldstein died in 1954 from a trucking accident, Jack immediately started moving the business out of hides and furs and into the scrap metal and new steel market.
Although their steel volume was still relatively small, in 1959 the corporation name was officially changed to Steel and Pipe Supply Company.
In 1962, he met the man who would eventually become the 2nd person to run Steel and Pipe Supply when Paul Van Nostran walked into Steel and Pipe Supply to see what this little steel company was up to.
In 1962 Jack bought a facility from Detroit that had been built to make tanks.
Finally in 1965 the effort paid off and Paul agreed to join Steel and Pipe Supply to take over sales and purchasing, but that was about to change in 2 short years.
With the company on solid footing in early 1966 and Jack decided to run for, and eventually being elected to, the city commission.
In a letter to family discussing the business on May 11, 1972 Jack discussed that NCR (National Cash Register Company) was coming in to give a quote on a complete ‘computerized bookkeeping installation’. He stated in this letter, words that hold true even today:
By early 1972 Steel and Pipe Supply was setting sales and profit records every month.
After years as Dennis Mullin’s right hand, Matt Crocker seamlessly assumed the role of President of Steel and Pipe Supply in 2014 while Dennis continued in his role as CEO and Chairman of the Board.
