Stella Maris company history timeline

1953

He dedicated Stella Maris on September 12, 1953 and within the first decade, as the original nursing home residents began to age, additional services were added and a new five-story building was constructed.

Since its beginning in 1953, Stella Maris has been blessed by the service of many Sisters of Mercy.

1955

Accordingly, on St Patrick’s Day, 1955 (the eighth anniversary of the SMA groundbreaking), ground was broken for the senior building and on December 18, 1955, the new, one-story school building, designed to accommodate 200 children, was blessed.

1980

Future growth changed the face of Stella Maris and in 1980, St Elizabeth Hall, a building of 200 apartments for seniors living independently, was opened.

1983

In 1983, Stella Maris was state-certified for hospice services, providing the state’s first integrated home hospice and inpatient hospice program.

In 1983, a second story was added to the school’s senior building.

Sadly, the beauty of this painting was never realized by Archbishop Mundelein.Since the commission was not honored, artist Poole retained ownership of the painting which was held by his family until it was purchased by Florence Colburn Wilterding in 1983.

1984

After the dedication of the new St Rosalia church in 1984, Rev.

1992

By 1992, Stella Maris initiated a subacute care program, providing short-term rehabilitation care for patients, and also opened the Marion Burk Knott Wing for persons with dementia.

1999

In 1999, Stella Maris became an affiliate of Mercy Health Services.

2005

For this reason when a new name for the unification of the six Northern Door church sites had to be chosen, Bev and Jean placed Stella Maris on the ballot.In 2005, after the six congregational sites voted, it was decided that, indeed, Stella Maris should be the appropriate name for the new parish.
