1930

Ex-Students create an association and plan the first Homecoming for May 1930.

1936

1936 North Street Nacogdoches, Texas

The fort was held by various nations and republics and was rebuilt in 1936.

1937

The graduate division was established in 1937.

1945

In 1945 the Forest Service of the United States Department of Agriculture established the East Texas Branch of the Forest Experiment Station at the college, the only case in which an act of Congress named an institution to cooperate in a forestry research program.

1960

Dating back to 1960, one of the university’s most interesting traditions is the annual football contest with nearby Northwest State University of Louisiana, in which the winner gets the 7½ foot wooden statue of Chief Caddo, a legendary Indian chief.

1975

The first doctoral program in forestry starts in 1975.

2010

Stephen F. Austin is located in the East Texas town of Nacogdoches, which has a population of more than 30,000, according to the 2010 census.

2011

Stephen F. Austin ranked #71 in the 2011 United States News & World Report edition of Best Colleges (Regional Universities - West).

2016

His most recent, MacArthur’s Korean War Generals, was the 2016 winner of The United States Military History Group’s Captain Richard Lukaszewicz Memorial Book Award.

Sue Dockery has served as the administrative assistant and office manager for the Department of History since 2016.
