Job Description
Main Function: Performs sterile processing and instrument tray assembly in accordance with JCAHO and AORN regulatory requirements. Responsible for the collection, cleaning, assembly and distribution of medical equipment to patient care areas.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Process, inspect, and pack complex instrument trays utilized in surgery, labor and deliver and nursing services.
Performs processing and assembly of ERT and special carts, including documentation of same in the absence of available Central Supply Distribution personnel.
Operates steam and Sterrad sterilizers to include proper documentation.
Performs visual inspection of packages during and after processing, checking for damage, expiration or correct labeling.
Decontaminate and clean reusable items and medical equipment according to department procedures.
Performs housekeeping duties related to supply processing.
Dispense supplies and/or equipment to designated areas based on par levels or requisition.
Adheres to the Hospital and Central Sterile policies, procedures and safety precautions.
Conducts routine inspections of CSP and user storage areas to assure quality of sterile items.
Perform other department duties as assigned.
Demonstrates the use of equipment in a safe and proper manner.
Demonstrates support and compliance with the Maryland General Health System and subsidiary corporations' mission, vision, philosophy, goals, objectives and policies
Qualifications
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Certified in Sterile Processing from a recognized association such as; International Association of Health care Central Service Materiel Management (IAHCSMM) or National Institute for the Certification of Healthcare Sterile Processing and Distribution Personnel (NICHSPDP) is required.
Experience:
Three years of experience in sterile processing and instrumentation, unless promoted from within.

How You'll Contribute:
We always do whatever it takes, even if it isn't specifically our “job.” In general, the Sterile Processing Tech is responsible for:
Cleaning, wrapping, and sterilizing instruments, trays, and supplies
Ensures availability of sterile instruments and supplies daily
Checks all sterilized items for expiration dates
Performs routine maintenance of instruments and equipment
Tracks and records lost/missing instruments and notify O.R. Manager/Assistant Supervisor as needed
Maintains inventory of instruments in work area
Assists in stocking and waste management of supplies
Assist with maintaining computerized patient charts
Proactively identifies supply needs to avoid out of stock situation and makes suggestions to reduce costs
Coordinates instrument repairs with Manager/ASC Supervisor and maintains record of repairs
Provides a clean, safe, and orderly work area and performs general housekeeping duties

We are tasked with staffing The Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) with Sterile Technicians. The Sterile Technicians are expected to perform the following:
Perform basic principles of microbiology as they apply to medical supply operations, related to the resistance of microorganisms to external destructive agents such as heat, chemicals, and ionizing radiation.
Provide knowledge of aseptic principles and techniques including characteristics of various detergents, cleaning techniques, sterilizing mediums, sterilizer operation and tests that determine effectiveness of sterilization. A thorough knowledge of packaging, storage and shelf-life characteristics.
Execute knowledge of the use, operation, assembly and disassembly of surgical instruments, medical devices, and specific cleaning, sterilizing and storage requirements of each.
Provide a basic understanding of medical and surgical terminology.
Apply judgement as required when selecting cleaning methods and sterilization mediums, placement of instruments in trays, and substitution of items for missing supplies. Judgement is required in resolving minor problems with equipment. Prudent and experienced judgement is required in emergency situations whether to use less desirable or more costly processing to make available urgently needed supplies.
Ensure the technique of gravity displacement, and cycles for specialty items.
Monitor the operation of the sterilizers using graphs, computer panels, Bowie Dick, and spore challenge tests (biological).
Correctly label and seal wrapped items with appropriately with proper sterilization tape.
Select the correct sterilization process according to the IFU (Instructions For Use) for the medical devices, either Hydrogen Peroxide (STERRAD and V-Pro), Ethylene Oxide (EO) or Steam sterilization processes.
Assemble and prepare the full range of specialty trays and instrument sets for the MOR, clinics, wards, and L&D for proper sterilization utilizing inventory sheets.
Determine the correct method of decontamination and sterilization; removal of blood, tissue fragments, body fluids, and other gross contaminants by wiping, soaking, rinsing, scrubbing and using ultrasonic and washer disinfecting equipment.
Become familiar with the operation of cleaning and sterilizing equipment. • Examine all items after decontamination/ pre-sterilization procedure to ensure that gross contaminants have been removed and that instruments function properly.
