In this position, the incumbent performs segments of work pertaining to the sterilization, preparation, supply items and Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) decontamination and distribution support for El Camino Hospital. The term "supply item" as used in this functional statement refers to disposable and reusable items for patient care including instrumentation (scissors, forceps, retractors, etc.), reusable medical equipment, surgical trays and sets and various other items that could be processed or assembled through the Decontamination and Preparation areas of Sterile Processing Department. The Sterile Processing Technician I specializes within the areas of critical and semi-critical surgical equipment processing. Job Responsibilities: The incumbent is under the supervision of the Manager and Shift Supervisor of the Sterile Processing Department. The professional responsibilities are divided into five major areas: decontamination, preparation and assembly, sterilization processing, storage and distribution. These responsibilities are successfully accomplished through the use of creative application of knowledge, skills, interpersonal and mentoring competencies, and a high level of professionalism. The incumbent will have basic knowledge of RME reprocessing as required by this position. The incumbent will be required to develop and maintain current knowledge of SPD procedures, which document the processes, and procedures for cleaning, disinfection, sterilization and preparation of RME appropriate to this position. The incumbent will be able to demonstrate knowledge of universal precautions for safety and prevention of cross contamination and their ability to utilize an acceptable proficiency in the use of RME appropriate to this position. The incumbent will receive guidance from more experienced staff members and requires frequent and direct supervision. Working as team member with other Sterile Processing Technicians of various experience, the incumbent will carry out segments of the daily work utilizing Manufactures Instructions For Use (IFU) in accordance with SPD instructions, policies, previous training, or accepted/standard practices. The incumbent will serve as a proctor for sterile processing students as instructed. The incumbent must earn and maintain current SPD certification within 1 year of hire date. Qualifications High School Diploma or equivalent. Three months experience in sterile processing and/or operating room in an acute care setting, or successful completion of a sterile processing program. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication and customer-service. Basic computer skills. License/Certification/Registration Requirements Current valid driver's license and proof of insurance. Ages of Patients Served This position does not require contact with patients, but may communicate with patients of all age categories. QUALIFICATIONS: High school Diploma or equivalent BLS certification One (1) year experience as a endoscopy technologist (preferred) ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Assists in preparing patient for designated procedure as requested by physician Assists physician during endoscopy procedure Handles patient specimens per policy Accurately completes laboratory slips and culture/path slips, as requested Reports observed changes in patient condition to Endoscopy/Recovery Room nurse (if applicable) After the procedure, restocks supplies as appropriate for the next procedure or end of the day Works collaboratively with the healthcare team to prepare the endoscopy suite according to requirements of patient, physician, and procedure, but not be limited to, assembling and providing properly functioning equipment, supplies, and instruments Works collaboratively with the endoscopy team to assure high level disinfection and/or sterility of instruments and supplies according to policy and procedure Follows manufacturer's instructions for use for all steps of cleaning, high level disinfection or sterilization for instruments and/or equipment Following manufacturer's instructions and centers policy and procedures, appropriately cleans endoscopy suite between cases and daily terminal cleaning Assists with maintaining adequate inventory of supplies Proactively participates in QAPI and Safety Programs Demonstrates knowledge of and adheres to the Code of Conduct Complies with center policies and procedures Demonstrates an attitude that is caring, respectful, sensitive, tactful, compassionate, empathetic, and tolerant Provides a safe environment for the patient Communicates safety concerns appropriately, following Chain of Command Legibly documents when necessary in the performance of job Promotes patient and physician satisfaction Practices appropriate aseptic techniques and sterile processes as appropriate to the endoscopy suite Wears appropriate Personal Protected Equipment (PPE) Observes universal precautions Refers situations beyond ability or function to proper person Regular and predictable attendance Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned Attends all required education Teamwork Works collaboratively with healthcare team Exhibits high level of integrity Maintains flexibility and performs other duties as required Participates in staff meetings, in-services, and continuing education as required We do not discriminate in practices or employment opportunities on the basis of an individual's race, color, national or ethnic origin, religion, age, sex, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, veteran status, disability, or any other prohibited category set forth in federal or state regulations.
