This position is an onsite role and does not offer a hybrid or remote option
Summary:
Supervises daily staff activities for the department. Independently performs entry level core functions. Core sterile processing functions include receive, sorting and decontamination of surgical/clinic items and instruments, inspection and packaging, identification of appropriate sterilization methods with appropriate cycle selection of sterilization or high level disinfection, completing appropriate required documentation and has the ability to perform routine testing of necessary equipment. Acts as a resource or subject matter expert for associate and mid level team members.
Responsibilities:
* Performs instrument and equipment decontamination and cleaning following IFU's while having the ability to disassemble items before choosing appropriate cleaning method. Performs visual inspection of instruments and equipment prior to appropriate assembly and packaging of instruments or equipment.
* Performs appropriate sterilization/high level disinfection of instrument and equipment based on IFUs while inspecting and ensuring all external indicators, filters and labels are appropriate. Performs routine cleaning and sterilizer testing including biological monitoring, leak testing and bowie dick tests as appropriate.
* Precepts and verifies competency and skill development of staff as appropriate while functioning as a resource and knowledge expert. Documents work performed utilizing instrument tracking software/paper documentation as required
* Determines, coordinates, and supervises daily staffing assignments and levels. Provides direction, orientation, training, coaching, and mentoring to staff. Assists with performance evaluations and disciplinary actions. Ensures staff compliance with regulatory requirements and departmental/organizational policies and procedures.
* Performs staff responsibilities as needed to fulfill required service levels. Leads the handling and resolution of complex issues and complaints.
Within scope of job, requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgement and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and take appropriate action.
Requirements:
* Minimum Required Education: High School diploma or GED. Preferred: Medical Terminology course.
* Required Licensure/Certification: Certified as a CSPDT (Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician) or CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician). Preferred: Leadership development courses, second certification.
* Minimum Experience: 3 years of experience in Sterile Processing department.

Must have a thorough familiarity with surgical procedures performed in a hospital Operating Room.
Must have knowledge of medical and surgical terminology, human anatomy, and physiology.
Must have a thorough knowledge of aseptic principles and techniques including characteristics of various types of detergents, and cleaning techniques.
Must have knowledge of the proper handling, cleaning, and reprocessing for use of flexible endoscopes such as colonoscopes and gastroscopes.

Must be capable of performing all physical demands of the SPS department.

Must be capable of working in a loud environment with occasional very loud noises.
Must be capable of wearing required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for 8 hours of a duty day with normal rest and meal breaks.
Must be capable of working in a hot and humid environment while wearing PPE.
Must be capable of performing repetitive work for long periods of time.

VA Level 2 certification with a minimum of 2 years current work experience in the SPS environment.

Operate and monitor sterilization equipment.
Disassemble carts and follow Universal Precautions for decontamination.
Sterilize, disinfect durable medical equipment and instruments, package clean supplies and instruments, maintain records for all instruments and transport sterilized items to the floor.
Assemble sterilized instruments and recheck all instruments for cleanliness and/or impairment. Properly check power equipment.
Take measures to allow for easy instrument tracking including following labeling processes, use of engraver, reporting and documenting all missing instruments and implants replaced in trays.
Communicate the equipment and instrument inventory status with the Central Processing staff and Surgery Charge Nurse including order status, back orders and/or changes.

Utilize applications and technology to accurately facilitate record keeping in accordance with State and Federal regulations.
