Organization:
PAMF-Palo Alto Medical Foundation CAD A Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for cleaning, sterilizing, and preparing surgical instruments and medical equipment to support safe patient care.The role includes cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilizing medical instruments using manual and mechanical methods, operating sterilization equipment such as autoclaves, inspecting and assembling instrument sets, and packaging and storing sterilized items for distribution. Technicians work independently, using sound judgment to support departmental operations by maintaining, testing, and setting up equipment as needed while following strict infection-control protocols. They ensure accurate inventory management and documentation, integrate education and technical skills to carry out safe and precise sterilization procedures, and adhere to all local, state, and federal regulations and organizational policies to protect patient privacy and safety. The position requires working in a clinical environment with exposure to chemicals and infectious materials, wearing proper PPE, and performing physically demanding tasks, with strong attention to detail and organizational skills essential for optimal patient care.

Basic Qualifications:
Experience
+ One year experience in instrument processing. Must know Medical Terminology to understand instrumentation, surgical procedures, and surgical schedule. Must have knowledge of various types of reusable surgical instrumentation, including power equipment and micro surgical instrumentation. Must know how to operate Sterile Processing departmental equipment (i.e. washers, ultrasonic, steam, gas, and chemical sterilizer). Must know cleaning of patient care equipment (i.e. I.V. pumps, feeding pumps, pneumatic pumps, CPM machines, PCA, and hypo/hyperthermia units, etc.) Must know sterilization monitoring, record keeping, and quality assurance protocols. Disassembles RMD and determines the correct cleaning method, such as, but not limited to, ultrasonic cleaners, mechanical washer-disinfectors, cart washer and chemical cleaning decontamination agents, as determined by manufacturer instructions.
The incumbent will have knowledge of the processes for Reusable Medical Devices (RMD) as required by this position. The incumbent will be required to maintain current knowledge of the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) which document the processes and procedures for cleaning, disinfection, sterilization and preparation of RMD appropriate to this position. The incumbent will be able to demonstrate their ability to utilize an acceptable proficiency in the use of RMD appropriate to this position.
