About the Role:
The Sterile Processing Technician will be responsible for cleaning, decontaminating, assembling, packaging, sterilizing, and storing surgical instruments and equipment to ensure all items are safe and ready for use in a busy outpatient surgical environment.
This position works closely with the Operating Room staff to maintain proper inventory, support smooth case flow, and ensure compliance with all safety and environmental standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Clean, disinfect, and sterilize surgical instruments and trays
Inspect instruments for proper function and quality
Assemble instrument sets according to procedure requirements
Operate and maintain sterilization equipment
Track and manage inventory of instruments and supplies
Work closely with the OR team to support case readiness
Maintain compliance with infection control and regulatory standards
Document all sterilization cycles and processes accurately
Qualifications:
Experience in a sterile processing or central processing setting preferred
Certification as a Sterile Processing Tech preferred but not required depending on experience
Strong understanding of infection control and sterilization standards
Ability to work in a fast paced clinical environment
Detail oriented with strong communication and teamwork skills

Essential Tasks and Responsibilities
Collect surgical and medical instrumentation for various campuses according to a scheduled route, verifying the accuracy of the instrumentation and ensuring they are properly packaged for transport.
Maintain accurate documentation throughout the delivery process, including tracking details if applicable, pick up time, and recipients signature to ensure proper chain of custody.
Take cart(s) to designated areas. Remove sterile trays from carts and place trays on their designated shelf for onsite storage
Verify the quantity and condition of instruments before and after delivery, reporting any discrepancies to the appropriate personnel. Locate carts with soiled instrumentation trays from the designated pick-up area. Load dirty trays on the truck.
Communicate effectively with campuses regarding pick-up and delivery schedules, addressing any concerns or questions promptly.
Carefully handle delicate surgical instrumentation to prevent damage during transport, following specific guidelines for all instrumentation.
Responsible for all pre-trip safety inspections, preventative truck maintenance services, and all other regulations per the Department of Transportation (DOT). Must adhere to Company DOT Program policies and procedures when applicable.
Optimize delivery routes to ensure timely delivery, taking into account traffic conditions and potential delays. Regularly inspect the delivery vehicle to ensure it is in proper working order and meets safety standards.
Provide and receives accurate feedback in a professional manner.
Adherence to standard precautions regarding the transport of surgical instrumentation, including proper labeling, temperature control, and biohazard safety procedures. Courier will be responsible for cleaning the truck on a scheduled timeline.

JOB DESCRIPTION: Assembles surgical instrument trays and pans and delivers sterilized items to the operating room. Assembles special procedure trays for such complex surgeries as open heart, transplant, major orthopedic surgeries, neurosurgical, laparoscopic, and spine surgeries. Uses computer to scan PIC tickets on instrument trays and case cart protocol. Properly operates cleaning and sterilization equipment such as washers, sterilizers, sonic cleaners and cart washers. Restocks prep areas with supplies and takes inventory of sterile instrument pans and trays. May retrieve contaminated equipment, supplies, trays and instruments from patient care areas for cleaning and sterilization. May collect needles and sharps containers from Operating Room for proper disposal. Monitors all sterilization equipment by testing and recording indicators. Assists in training staff in the identification of surgical instruments and individual pans. Delegates assignments and adjusts work flow to meet the most important needs. Provides input on employee performance in job conferences. Performs related responsibilities as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A high school diploma or equivalent. Three years of experience in sterile processing. Registered as a Central Service Technician. Experience with computer software. Must possess strong leadership skills and the ability to prioritize and delegate assignments. The ability to lift equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.

* Secures necessary supplies, instruments and equipment for individual cases through the utilization of preference cards, reporting and staff/physician requests.
* Orients new sterile processing technicians, surgical technologists and nursing personnel to SPD case preparation process covering preference cards, pick tickets, supply identification, supply location and substitution of specialty surgical instruments.
* Inspects sterile instruments and supplies for evidence of contamination. Distinguishes between processed and unprocessed instrument trays and peel packs.
* Inventories, orders and maintains stockroom supplies and instruments within specific area of responsibility.
* Updates preference cards based on feedback from SPD leaders, clinical supervisors and surgery systems team.
* Resolves instrument, equipment and supply conflicts with the OR and the SPD department.
* Reviews the status of designated service emergency carts, ensures adequate, non-expired supply of sterile instruments and supply stock.
* Inventories peel packed instruments and maintains supplies within scope of responsibility; reporting needs to immediate surgical supervisor and SPD Coordinator.
* Monitors surgical schedule throughout the day to identify changes and additional procedures, ensuring cases are pulled and sent to the OR department in a timely manner.
* Operates and documents sterilization procedures.
* Assists in the ongoing development and administration of hospital and department Quality Improvement initiatives.
* Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Immediately reports any mechanical or electrical equipment malfunctions, unsafe conditions, or employee/patient/visitor injury-accident to Manager/Supervisor.

Essential Tasks and Responsibilities
Functions as a specialty technician in the Endoscopy procedure rooms or at bedside and assumes other duties as assigned. Set up procedures with proper endoscope(s) and supplies according to endoscopic procedure requirements prior to the start of the procedure. Demonstrates competency as a Endoscopy Specialty Technician. Assists the proceduralist with endoscopic procedures. Assists in the collection, preparation, verification and logging of specimens. Properly cleans room at completion of procedure (to include proper bedside cleaning of the endoscopes) and resets for the next procedure. Clean and disinfect endoscopes as needed according to manufacturer recommendations and facility standards.
Maintains safe and aseptic environment. Assist in the monitoring/troubleshooting of endoscopic equipment to ensure appropriate functionality and escalating any issues. Ensure proper patient body alignment during the procedure by position monitoring checks e.g. feet, arms, etc. Precept new staff as assigned and demonstrates sound clinical & positive interpersonal skills. Adheres to infection control practices. Demonstrates knowledge of safety policies and procedures.
Contributes to productivity of the department by demonstrating effective time management. Expedites safe, rapid turnover of procedures. Accurately reports supplies used to ensure proper charging. Reports all problems or necessary changes to the Circulating RN or Charge Nurse. Arranges own schedule to meet requirement of overtime, call changes and holiday coverage. Accepts call as assigned and is available within 30 minutes (or less).
Contributes to the overall efficiency of the Endoscopy Unit by performing routine task. Performs special assignments. Assist with general daily clean up and stocking of procedure rooms.
