Under the direct supervision of the Director, Surgical Services and the Supervisor, Sterile Prep, the Certified Sterile Prep Technicianprocesses all materials that can be reprocessed, including instrument sets, trays, equipment, and specialty items to include decontamination, assembly, packaging and terminal sterilization. Assembles surgical case carts and equipment according to departmental policies and procedures.
ACCOUNTABILITIES
DECONTAMINATION:
Separates instruments from other articles for purposes of washing and decontamination and notifies supervisor of any missing items and reports any malfunctions.
Disassembles, cleans, and decontaminates general, specialty and loaner instrumentation.
Follows manufacturers recommendations when indicated.
Assembles instruments, sets, and peel-pouched items. Prepares special items upon request. Must be able to communicate both inter and intra departmentally.
Demonstrates knowledge and competency in performing biological testing of steam autoclaves and sterrad units.
Decontaminates patient care equipment from the nursing units.
Adheres to universal precautions and uses appropriate personal protective equipment.
Receives and inspects instruments from the decontamination area and follows established procedures for deletion and repair.
STERILIZATION:
Responsible for loading of all baskets for both ultrasonic cleaners, washer-sterilizers, carriages for plasma sterilizer, and cart washer according to procedures.
Maintains environmental cleanliness and order in general as well as specific work areas.
Prepares documentation for autoclave, plasma bacteriological culture, tray sets, and peel patches.
TRAY SET/ ASSEMBLY
Assembles instruments, sets, and packs according to specifications in departmental catalogue.
Assembles surgical case carts with an accuracy of 90 percent.
Conscientiously performs all functions related to materials processing, which is packaging, loading of machinery, sterilizing, aerating, and handling.
Required to perform other job functions in processing areas as assigned/directed by supervisor.
STERILE STORAGE/SUPPLY:
Responsible for receipt of all reprocessable materials by way of manual delivery according to established procedures and safety regulations.
Responsible for immediate reporting of malfunctioning of any stationary equipment.
Assesses the needs in sterile storage area and maintains inventory levels as designated.
Prepares and maintains inventory of miscellaneous supply items required by Surgical Services.
Identifies outdated equipment and follows procedures for reprocessing.
Notifies supervisory personnel of problems with inventory items.
Alerts supervisor of malfunction of any equipment.
Treats confidentially of all information received and processed.
Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education: High School Diploma required.
Skills: Good verbal and written communication skills.
Licenses: Certified Sterile Prep Tech, CBSPD (Certified Board for SterileProcessing and Distribution) credential required.

Responsible for inspecting, disinfecting, assembling, processing and distributing patient care instruments, equipment and supplies in accordance with established policies, procedures and Association of Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) standards. Acts as a role model and resource to peers and other members of the health care team related to processing of equipment, instruments, and supplies. Stores, rotates and ensures all instruments and supplies are correctly labeled.
Essential Functions
Cleans soiled instruments and equipment utilizing the appropriate personal protection equipment (PPE). Inspects and tests instruments and equipment to ensure proper functioning. Utilizes the insulation tester, leak tester (flex scopes) and other mechanical/digital validation tools to ensures that proper sterilization occurs.
Strive for zero defects.
Acts as a role model and resource to peers and other members of the health care team related to processing of equipment, instruments, and supplies.
Ensures proper processing of equipment, instruments and supplies, including any vendor trays by prioritizing the work load to correspond with medical/surgical floor needs, surgical case loads and physician requirements.
Accurately differentiates between instruments functionality and its specialty. Monitors performance of sterilizers, sonic, utensil washers and other equipment and fills out repair requisitions as necessary.
Answer, interpret and fill phone requests and other issues according to departmental standards.
Demonstrates proficiency in assembling highest complexity trays such as implant trays and ambulatory clinic tray turn-around process.
Ensures all customer area requests are handled in an efficient, timely, and professional manner.
Low error rate and high productivity rate.
Actively participates in safety initiatives and risk mitigating measures where appropriate and completes all position and unit safety related competencies and requirements on a timely basis.
Performs other duties as assigned.

The person can prepare, assemble and sterile instruments and supplies according to the parameters of sterilization following regulatory guidelines. This PRN job will work from 1-3 days a week Monday through Friday and off every weekend it is a varied schedule based on the PRN needs and availability.

Techs will also have a preceptor while on orientation. Technicians will assemble case carts according to surgery schedules. This will include sterile instrumentation according to patient procedure. When completed technicians will transport case cart to the OR and place in designated area. Depending on your hire site in Grand Rapids, SterileProcessing Departments can anticipate 40-90 surgical cases. Sites may include small differences but can expect the same job duties with expectations. Team members can also expect to wear surgical attire in the department.
Orientation/Training
New team members are required to complete a SterileProcessing educational training course. The first 6 weeks of this 90-day course are mandatory 1st shift 0700-1530 Monday-Friday. Once the course is completed, the team member will transition to their hired shift times for the remainder of orientation.

SterileProcessing professionals are responsible for cleaning, decontaminating, sterilizing, and distributing medical and surgical instrumentation. They are among the most vital contributors to the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care. Work performed in the SterileProcessing department usually follows a processing cycle. Decontam>Inspect>Assembly>Package>Sterilize>Inspect>Store>Inspect >Dispense. After use, items that can be reprocessed are returned to the decontamination area to start the process all over again, it is important to note that at each step in the process, items are inspected to ensure that they are clean, in good repair, assembled, and processed correctly. SterileProcessing Techs are also involved in the record keeping and tracking process across many different functions of their jobs. They must provide properly processed products when they are needed. The patient must be the center of every quality concern.
