Under the direct supervision of the Manager and the Coordinator/Charge Nurse, the Central Sterilization Technician is responsible for cleaning, assembling, disinfecting and sterilizing all equipment, supplies and/or instruments. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: The Sterile Processing Technician must have a high school diploma or equivalent, possess at least one year experience in the OR or Central Sterilization. The Sterile Technician must have a basic understanding of aseptic technique, knowledge of sterilization principles, processing techniques and instrument/equipment care. The Tech must be certified in sterile processing by an accredited organization required by eighteen (18) months. The Sterile Technician must be able to adapt to a repetitive, short cycle operation, have some ability to operate large equipment, to disassemble and assemble instruments and possess some familiarity with surgical instrumentation. PRIMARY PURPOSE The Dental Sterilization Tech supports the performance of each dental provider and auxiliary staff members by ensuring that tools, equipment, and clinic environment are kept sterile and clean per the organizations standards. The Dental Sterilization Tech communicates regularly with the Dental Director to provide updates regarding patient and clinic flow while ensuring patient coordination is maintained to meet the needs of patients from registration to discharge. This role is perceived as a stepping stone to becoming a Dental Assistant, with the expectation that any incumbent receives their Ohio Radiographer Licensure within 6 months after date of hire. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Coordinate and oversee patient flow, assuring patients are seated timely and appropriately. Provide daily schedule support to maximize efficiency and accommodate late, walk-in, and emergency patients whenever possible. Provide support to dental assistants, dental hygienists, and dentists. Assure the clinical area meets or exceeds quality and regulatory standards. Removes all instruments and tools from treatment room after use and processes them for sterilization. Assists in preparing trays and setting up for all procedures. Cleans and sets up treatment rooms for scheduled procedures. Prepares, Decontaminates, and disinfects instruments, tray set up and instrument sterilization. Manages general house cleaning tasks. Break down and set up operatories. Required Skills/Abilities: Experience in processing, assembling, troubleshooting, preparing, sterilizing, storing, and issuing sterile and unsterile medical supplies and equipment. Possess knowledge of the technical names, general uses, physical characteristics, and operating conditions of medical supply items. Proven experience in decontamination, cleaning, preparation, sterilization, and storage procedures. Knowledge of aseptic techniques. Skilled in operating a washer-sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaners, and gas and steam sterilizers. Attention to detail and ability to follow strict protocols and procedures. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work with a diverse employee population including all levels of management and staff. Education and Experience: Successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in courses such as medical supply processing, storage, and distribution; sterile supplies, operating room, and surgical technician courses; or other fields related to the position. Certification as a sterile processing technician (e.g., Certified Registered Central Service Technician - CRCST) is a plus.
