Position Summary:

Certified Endoscopy Reprocessor (CER) required at hire or must be obtained within 1 year

Job Summary: The SterileProcessingTechnician I ensures the highest quality standards are met by departmental procedures and established industry standards. SterileProcessingTechnician I inspects and de-lints towels and other linens; prepares and wraps items for sterilization; inventory and stocks sterilized items in department and in nursing units in hospital. International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management (IAHCSMM) and/or the Certification Board for SterileProcessing and Distribution, Inc. Job Overview

Responsibilities include receiving, sorting and decontamination of surgical/clinic items and instrumentation; inspection and packaging of single instruments and instrument kits; identification of appropriate sterilization method and cycle selection, appropriate documentation for all sterileprocesses; and accurate inventory assignment relating to the case cart build process. This position may rotate throughout all areas of sterileprocessing to support the department while adhering to policies and procedures. May have oversight of area during shift with supervisory backup.
Job Description
Minimum Qualifications:
1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Central Services Technician National Certification (CRCST) or Certification Board for SterileProcessing and Distribution (CBSPD) required within 12 months of hire.
3. Two (2) years of Central Processing experience.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities listed below are intended to describe the general nature of work and are not intended to be an all-inclusive list. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.
1. Receives soiled, used, and/or contaminated equipment, surgical instruments, scopes, and supplies from Operating Rooms, patient care units, and specialized areas; documents arrival and cleaning process utilizing asset tracking software.
2. Disassembles items as needed before choosing appropriate cleaning method.
3. Identifies items in need of repair upon receipt and ensures information is maintained during cleaning process.
4. Selects and utilizes appropriate manual cleaning tools to achieve instrument decontamination, including but not limited to instrument brushes, enzymatic detergent, flushing devices, ultrasonic bath, leak testers, etc.
5. Selects and utilizes appropriate automated cleaning tools to achieve instrument decontamination; this includes loading and selecting appropriate cycles on automated washers.
6. Documents all work performed utilizing instrument tracking software.
7. Inspects and assembles all equipment, instruments, scopes, and instrument sets following product recipe, verifies items are functional, free of debris and required per instrument recipe.
8. Documents items missing from instrument set, escalating set to SPD Supervisor or Designee for further guidance.
9. Selects appropriate packaging method, including any sterilization accessories (corner protectors etc.) ensures all external indicators and/or labels are securely affixed to item.
10. Transports items to sterilization as needed.
11. Interprets package labeling to select appropriate sterilization method and approved cycle, options include Steam, Hydrogen Peroxide Plasma, or others as required.
12. Inspects packages to ensure all external indicators, filters, and/or labels are securely affixed to items, returns non-satisfactory products to instrument room.
13. Loads sterilizer as appropriate to ensure cycle completion; includes biological testing as appropriate. Performs routine sterilizer testing and maintenance including biological monitoring, leak test, bowie dick test, and daily/weekly sterilizer maintenance as appropriate. Following established policies interprets and appropriately documents results of sterilizer testing. Escalates positive results as appropriate for intervention.
14. Utilizes patient specific pick lists to accurately gather surgical instruments and disposable supplies requested by attending surgeon or another Peri-Operative representative.
15. Documents case cart build process in instrument tracking software, continuously updating the record as items are fulfilled to maintain integrity of needs list.
16. Inspects items during the pick process to ensure package integrity remains intact, package is within expiration date, and substitutions are appropriate.
17. Communicates unmet surgical supply requests to leadership for resolution assistance.
18. Returns supplies not used after surgical procedures to their proper stock location.
19. Wears personal protective equipment (PPE) as required and at all times.
20. Maintains cleans work area by wiping area with antibacterial agent upon work completion or as needed.
21. May provide leadership, direction and training to other teammates.
22. Instructs, monitors, and evaluates shift Technicians on the proper care and handling of surgical instruments and the principles of sterility set by specific policies.
23. Instructs, monitors, and evaluates shift Technicians of the proper use of all washers, sterilizers, and record keeping systems according to specific policies.
24. Effectively communicates all pertinent information relating to the responsibilities of each shift and collaborate with department supervisors and OR personnel for resolution of issues.
25. Anticipates daily and next day requirements relating to surgical instrumentation, equipment, and supplies to ensure all needs are met and anticipate work load on all shifts.
26. Monitors surgical kit assembly and case-cart setups to insure completeness and accuracy. Resolves potential equipment and supply conflicts or shortages with satisfactory substitutions.
27. Effectively documents and communicates supply conflicts and shortages with appropriate CPD and Nursing staff.

GI PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: - Room set up to include opening rooms: OFP (scope flush), CO2, suction. - Look at daily assignment: assigned to rooms, decontamination, or reprocessing - Obtain Clean Cart system and set up scopes for the shift and highlight whether it is a gastroscope, colonoscope (C=adult colon, PCF= Pedi colonoscope) - Scopes are kept in a closed, dry room that requires card access and access to the specialized drying closet. - Blue cart is gotten to transport scopes to procedure rooms: green covered tray to include scope and the Endo kits. - Set up scope - Sign on to computer and ProVation MD, locate the patient for listed procedure, verify correct account/medical record number and document correct information such as the PCP and scope number. - Maintain HIPPA standards - Using proper PPE: between a double procedure or post procedure pre clean at the bedside, attach patient sticker to the scope tray and the Aegis one hour indicator sticker (complete info on sticker). - Check oral suction use with upper endoscopy. - Dispose of empty water bottles with last scope of the day. - Dispose of dirty cannisters and replace. - Flush Environ-mate with Enzymatic solution daily followed by a liter of water. - Flush Environ-mate with bleach solution, followed by 2 liters of water, leave the system and wall suction on, clamp suction tubing overnight once/week. - Sign off computer and turn off monitor. - Remove used blue gowns to dirty utility room in the recovery room. - Stock rooms at the end of the day following par levels. - Performs all other duties as needed.

Assembles properly inspected, processed surgical instruments, carts, and equipment according to kit lists to meet the demands of quality patient care. Ensures all items are cleaned, sterilized, and stored in accordance with established policies and manufacturer guidelines.
I. Major Responsibilities:
1. Clean, package, sterilize, and store instruments and kits per policy.
2. Maintain accurate documentation of sterilized equipment and biological testing.
3. Check and restock par level and code carts; monitor for outdated supplies.
4. Receive, store, and distribute supplies; coordinate equipment checks with Biomedical.
5. Document equipment loss, repairs, and requisitions; order specialty beds as needed.
II. Position Qualifications:
License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1. High School diploma or equivalent.
2. Successful completion of a SterileProcessing training course.
3. Certification by a SterileProcessing Association and maintenance of re-certification with 12 education credits annually.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1 - Demonstrates a clear understanding of all sterilization functions and control methods.
a - All items are correctly sorted according to the appropriate mode of sterilization.
b - The correct wrap, sealing tape, and chemical indicators are chosen in accordance with the selected sterilizationprocess.
c - Items are loaded in the approved manner and properly logged on the load record sheet.
d - Each item and the load record sheet are stamped with a load control sticker that indicates the sterilizer number, load number, and Julian date of processing.
e - Machine printout tapes are checked to assure all parameters of sterilization were met, cycle was completed, and initials are documented on each tape.
f - All documentation is completed for each sterilization cycle.
2 - Performs all assigned duties while in assembly/packing area with demonstrated understanding of guidelines and principles for SterileProcessing.
a - Kits are correctly identified and proper count sheet is selected to assemble the kit.
b - All instruments are carefully inspected for cleanliness, alignment, and proper function. Unacceptable instruments are removed and replaced, when possible. If no replacement is available missing items are clearly noted on the count sheet and an "Incomplete" sticker listing missing items is attached to the outer wrap.
c - Count sheets are used to assemble sets and are initialed before placing in the set.
d - The proper chemical indicator is placed in the instrument tray or package before wrapping.
e - All instrument trays are wrapped with appropriately sized paper and are closed with the correct sealing tape.
f - Individual instruments are peel pouched or wrapped correctly.
g - Items are labeled as to contents, department of use, and initialed.
h - Items are properly sterilized and allowed to cool before returning them to inventory.
i - Work area is kept neat, left clean, and all kits in your work area have been completed by the end of your shift
3 - Performs all assigned duties while in the decontamination area with demonstrated understanding of CDC mandates and department guidelines.
a - Proper dress and protective gear is used at all times.
b - Properly utilizes the dirty lifts and empties them in a timely manner.
c - Empties and processes contents of one case cart at a time to limit cross-contamination and help track instruments and equipment.
d - Instruments are sorted according to immersability, heat sensitivity, and delicateness before cleaning in the approved manner.
e - Hand washed items are carefully inspected and handled appropriately during the cleaning process. Items are placed in the pass-through windows in a timely fashion to maintain a good work flow.
f - Grossly soiled items are soaked and scrubbed in the sinks before placing in the ultrasonic cleaner or washer-decontaminators.
g - Washer racks are loaded correctly to prevent injury to staff, damage to instruments, and harm to the machines.
h - Properly loads and unloads the case cart washer with regard to personal injury and damage to machinery.
i - Work area is kept neat and left clean and orderly at the end of your shift.
4 - Performs and accurately documents testing of all sterilizers.
a - Completes Bowie-Dick testing daily in each steam autoclave and interprets results. Documentation is accurately recorded.
b - Completes a Diagnostic test on each Steris System 1 and attaches the machine printout tape to the Steris logbook.
c - Includes a biological test in each sterilizer on the first load of the day. Biological is planted in the incubator and required documentation is recorded in the log book.
d - Accurately documents results of biological testing within in the proper time frame on all sterilizer tests.
e - Notifies the appropriate person/persons if there has been any sterilizer failures or positive biological tests.
f - A biological indicator is run with every load containing an implant.
5 - Performs all required steps in the operation of a case cart system.
a - Each pick list is accurately generated by using the computer program designated for this task.
b - Is able to fill all case carts accurately and efficiently, as assigned.
c - Independently utilizes the computer to generate pick lists for case carts when additional are added to the surgical schedule.
d - Add-on cases are recorded on the Add-On Log and completed in advance of the beginning of the case.
e - Completed case carts are sent to the OR by means of the clean lift in a timely fashion
f - Case carts are neatly organized and any missing items are listed on top of the cart.
g - Shelves are restocked with needed supplies and additional supplies are secured from stores if needed
6 - Participates in maintaining proper inventory levels of supplies.
a - Notifies Manager or Secretary when an item needs to be ordered to prevent outages.
b - Demonstrates an understanding of rotating all stock by utilizing the first in-first out method.
c - Demonstrates proper care and handling of reusable and disposable supplies.
d - Puts sterile items in the proper location after processing and cooling are completed.
e - Maintains an adequate level of supplies by stocking shelves and work areas.
7 - Technology - Embraces technological solutions to work processes and practices.
a - Utilizes Lotus Notes to remain knowledgeable of changes and additions to department practices
b - Uses the time clock and computer to correctly enter time on and off work, such as vacation time, Float Holidays, and sick time.
c - Utilizes computer programs such as OR Manager, TimePC, and Meditech to complete assignments.
d - Effectively utilizes department manuals and data bases as resources to clarify and/or resolve questions and remain up-to-date with techniques and procedures on CPD.
8 - Safety Awareness - Fosters a "Culture of Safety" through personal ownership and commitment to a safe environment.
a - Successfully answers safety questions in annual mandatory education program.
b - Understands individual roles/responsibilities during hospital codes (e.g., Code Green, Code Red.)
c - Operates all department equipment safely.
d - Understands the proper procedure to follow when equipment has malfunctioned.
e - Follows CDC guidelines for Universal Precautions when handling soiled equipment, instruments, and supplies.
f - Makes appropriate use of personal protective equipment and utilizes proper body mechanics.
g - Properly handles and disposes of biohazard waster by following Infection Control guidelines and hospital policy.
h - Knows where to find material safety data sheets (MSDS) for chemicals used to perform job.
9 - Demonstrates the ability to be flexible and set priorities to meet the needs of the customer.
a - Priority items are given immediate attention in decontamination and processing areas.
b - Demonstrates the flexibility to adjust work schedule to complete STAT items ahead of other duties.
c - Provides follow through on priorities and communicates the status of progress to the requestor.
