Certification within one year of employment. Essential Duties: Demonstrates knowledge and awareness of sterilization processes including high-level disinfection and low-level disinfection. Loads, operates and cleans all sterilizers. Ensures proper operation of all equipment on a daily basis. Maintains appropriate biological and chemical control tests, as required by the department, and documents results accurately in the appropriate log. Uses knowledge of sterilization principles to correctly wrap or package items for sterilization and processes. Inspects instruments for proper functioning and completeness. Assures that instrument trays are assembled according to the count sheet and instruments are counted, clean and in proper working condition. Demonstrates knowledge regarding handling and care of basic equipment, instruments and trays. Demonstrates knowledge of infection control and understanding of standard precautions. Cleans and inspects patient care equipment for proper function. Stores all equipment and supplies appropriately within the SPD department. Demonstrates complete understanding of all procedures for cleaning all flexible scopes used by the Operating Room. Demonstrates knowledge and awareness of storage and rotation of sterile supplies. Physical Requirements: Work is typically performed in a clinical setting that exposes incumbent to biohazards, hazardous chemicals, and hazardous medications common in a health care environment. Such exposure will be mitigated, in accordance with local policies and operating procedures, as per USP800 standards, OSHA guidance, and local risk assessment practices. Standard safety precautions and PPE are required and specified per local policies. The work requires some walking and standing during a normal workday. Some heavy lifting may be required (e.g., carrying heavy items such as surgical instruments, breaking down supplies and carrying small boxes). The employee will routinely alternate between a contaminated and a carefully controlled clean environment. In both, the employee is required to wear special protective clothing, which is often uncomfortably warm and restrictive. If processing contaminated supplies, the employee must wear a hair cover, gloves, impervious gown, and impervious shoe covers. The work area may be confining, hot and humid and the employee subject to falls from slipping on wet floors, burns from handling hot surgical trays, cuts associated with the handling of surgical instruments, and dermatitis from various cleaning agents used during disinfection procedures. Unpleasant orders are encountered frequently during the processing of items. The work area can be quite noisy due to the clatter of metal upon metal when working with instruments and trays, the rumble of carts, and the operations of sterilizing equipment, ultrasonic cleaners, and automatic transport systems. The work requires standing and walking during the entire workday and frequent bending and lifting of packages (occasionally weighing as much as 50 pounds). The work requires dexterity and visual acuity for manipulating, disassembly and assembly of instrumentation. Work is performed in a Medical Center setting and involves regular and recurring exposure to contagious disease, to various hazards from processing equipment and exposure to exposure to extreme temperature changes. In the performance of official duties, the employee must be able to utilize office automation equipment, personal computers, bar code scanners, fax, and copier machines and CENSITRAC software programs, and possesses the ability to apply skills to ever changing office/inventory technologies. The employee must be proficient in utilizing the CENSITRAC and other VA automated systems. Education There is no education substitution at this grade level. Northern Light Mercy Hospital Department: Gastroenterology Clinic Outpatient Surg & Spec Center Work Type: Full Time Hours Per Week: 36.00 Work Schedule: 7:00 AM to 4:30 PM * Sign On Bonus for Eligible Candidates* The Endoscopy technician is responsible for the utilization of endoscopy equipment and supplies including biopsy forceps, snares, injection needles, cytology brushes, forceps, dilators, cautery, 6-shooters and ERBE cautery. The Endoscopy technician is responsible for all aseptic techniques during the procedure as well as the scope disinfection process. This includes the pre-cleaning of all scopes in the procedure room, manual cleaning post procedure utilizing all manufacturer and Joint Commission guidelines. The incumbent is responsible for the high level disinfection process utilizing AER scope processing equipment. The incumbent is responsible for proper storage, labeling and use of all chemicals used during these three processes as well as the office Manometry probe supplies and disinfection. The incumbent is responsible for the set-up of all supplies in the procedure room, installation of the scope and retrieval and proper specimen labeling during procedure. The Endoscopy Tech supports the physician in the Operating Room during the ERCP cases. This includes the use of stents, and all ERCP equipment. The Endoscopy Tech is responsible for all infection control within the procedure room and scope processing room. The incumbent works under the direct supervision of physicians and assists the RN in quality care of the patient as well as other tasks needed. The Endoscopy technician is also required to be on-call as needed by the unit, which includes weeknights, holidays and weekends. Responsibilities: * Assists with Endoscopic procedures * Appropriately utilizing biopsy forceps, snares, injection needles, cytology brushes, retrieval baskets and forceps, Endostat III Cautery, Bicap machine, ERBE cautery, 7-shooter. * Assists the physician in performing dilation equipment such as balloons, Maloney dilators and Savory dilators. * Assists the physician with insertion of PEG tubes and J-Tubes. * Assists the physician in ERCP procedures including sphincterotomy, stone retrieval, biopsy, lithotripsy, stent placement and the care of equipment utilized. * Assists with emergent procedures such as foreign body removal and GI bleeding, epinephrine injection, and clips. * Proper retrieval, care and handling of specimens. * Maintains Endoscopy Suite in a Ready status. * Responsible for cleanliness of field. * Cleans room after each patient as directed. * Responsible for the post procedure cleaning and sterilization of endoscopes and diagnostic equipment. * Records disinfection chemical changes and ensures chemicals are at a satisfactory level. * Changes disinfection chemicals bi-weekly, handling hazardous materials on a regular basis. * Re-stocks equipment used. * Manages equipment repair and replacement. * Orders equipment as needed. * Sets up suite to receive patients. * Schedules patient procedures (add-ons) * Ensures all disinfection equipment and scopes in proper working order. * Promotes Safety for Patients, Staff and Visitors. * Assesses emergency equipment (suctioning) and supply checks. * Demonstrates safe patient handling (positioning patients) * Maintains a safe and therapeutic environment utilizing principles of infection control, safety and safe operation of equipment. * Identifies and communicates potential quality concerns to nurse manager. * Accepts Responsibility for Further Professional Development * Participates in continuing education process. * Participates in Quality Assurance. * Attends scheduled inservices. * Research and trial new equipment with assistance of vendors. * Attends six schedules staff meetings per year. * Works Cooperatively with Other Health Team Members. * Maintains positive relationships. * Assists with orientation of new employees. * Promotes teamwork and harmonious work environment. * Promotes advocacy for patients and staff. * Demonstrates Behaviors Consistent with Organizational Mission, Goals and Policies. * Demonstrates practices which keep all medical record information protected and confidential. * Follows and adheres to Patient Rights policies at all times. * Takes accountability for information contained in the departmental and hospital procedure manuals.
