What You'll Do As a Sterile Processing Tech 1, you will directly contribute to LifeLink's life-saving mission. Under direct supervision, following established standards and procedures perform routine duties necessary for the proper function of the Central Service department. General responsibilities include, but are not limited to, cleaning, wrapping, sterilization, storage and distribution of instruments and/or supplies utilized by the Procurement and Processing department. Key Responsibilities: To assist with handling and set up equipment and supplies to be processed by Central Services. Maintaining inventory par levels for Central Services in order to properly supply Processing and Procurement department needs. Maintain and fill solution carts as needed. Receive deliveries and place supplies in proper locations within Central Services as necessary. Attend continuing education courses to retain certification as it relates to the Central Service Department. Receive, clean and decontaminate surgical instruments and/or equipment as necessary. Perform daily monitoring and maintenance of sterilization equipment. Sterilize instruments, equipment, linen and supplies using steam sterilizers. Load the sterilizers appropriately. Complete the appropriate manual documentation and electronic records prior to the sterilization process. Perform Quality Control for the sterilizers to verify that all requirements for sterilization have been met. Stocks case carts to ensure all items are accounted for and available for Processing. Work requires the mental ability to prepare the documentation necessary to conform to the standards outlined in SOP policy, AAMI and AATB standards, OSHA requirements and all other relative agencies. Working environment temperatures may vary from 68 degrees F to 80 degrees F. The Medical Supply Technician (MST) works within the Sterile Processing Service Line at the C.W. Bill Young VA Medical Center, Bay Pines VA Healthcare System in Bay Pines FL. In this position, the MST will provide sterilization, preparation, supply items and reusable medical equipment decontamination and distribution support for the Lee County VA Medical Center. The Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) is knowledgeable of processes related to Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the processes and procedures for cleaning, disinfection, sterilization and preparation of RME. Duties include but are not limited to the following: Duties and responsibilities of the Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) include, but are not limited to: * Receives contaminated critical and semi-critical RME in the decontamination area and may receive noncritical equipment in the decontamination area as well. * Disassembles complex RME and determines the correct cleaning method, such as but not limited to ultrasonic cleaners, mechanical washers, cart washers and chemical cleaning/decontamination agents, as determined by manufacturer instructions. * Removes soil, blood, tissue fragments, body fluids, and other contaminants by wiping, soaking, rinsing, and scrubbing. * Assembles instruments; including the most complex sets, and other surgical items, by selecting appropriate items, trays, instruments, etc. and assembles them in the correct manner to ensure appropriate sterilization. * Inspects, assembles and determines the correct method and packaging for sterilization such as but not limited to steam, hydrogen peroxide, ETO, and high-level disinfecting scope re-processors. * Labels all sterilized items correctly according to AAMI and VHA Directive 1116(2) standards. * Performs and documents daily operational checks and records for all sterilization equipment. * Builds the full complement of Operating Room case carts to include RME, implants, and disposable. * Identifies suitable replacement if requested item is not available. * Utilizes advanced functions of instrument tracking system. * Provides guidance and training to staff members with less experience Preferred Experience: Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work.
