Job Responsibilities:
Decontaminate, inspect, assemble, and sterilize surgical instruments, trays, equipment, and supplies in accordance with hospital policies and AAMI standards.
Prepare and pull surgical case carts accurately and on time to support Operating Room schedules and emergency procedures.
Assemble sterile linen, trays, metalware basins, and equipment for use throughout the Medical Center.
Operate and monitor sterilization equipment, ensuring proper loading, cycle selection, documentation, and quality control.
Perform routine inspections, testing (e.g., biological and chemical indicators), and documentation to maintain sterility assurance.
Deliver sterile supplies and equipment to designated departments while maintaining chain of custody and infection control standards.
Maintain cleanliness and organization of the Central Sterile department, reporting equipment issues and supporting continuous process improvement.
Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:
Candidates must have 2.5 years experience and atleast one travel placement completed.If they are a new traveler, they must have OVER 3 years of experience
Case cart experience is HIGHLY preferred
CBSPD or CRCST certification required
BLS AHA

Job Description
Main Function: Performs sterileprocessing and instrument tray assembly in accordance with JCAHO and AORN regulatory requirements. Responsible for the collection, cleaning, assembly and distribution of medical equipment to patient care areas.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Process, inspect, and pack complex instrument trays utilized in surgery, labor and deliver and nursing services.
Performs processing and assembly of ERT and special carts, including documentation of same in the absence of available Central Supply Distribution personnel.
Operates steam and Sterrad sterilizers to include proper documentation.
Performs visual inspection of packages during and after processing, checking for damage, expiration or correct labeling.
Decontaminate and clean reusable items and medical equipment according to department procedures.
Performs housekeeping duties related to supply processing.
Dispense supplies and/or equipment to designated areas based on par levels or requisition.
Adheres to the Hospital and Central Sterile policies, procedures and safety precautions.
Conducts routine inspections of CSP and user storage areas to assure quality of sterile items.
Perform other department duties as assigned.
Demonstrates the use of equipment in a safe and proper manner.

Qualifications
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience:

Purpose & Scope:

Perform basic principles of microbiology as they apply to medical supply operations, related to the resistance of microorganisms to external destructive agents such as heat, chemicals, and ionizing radiation.
Provide knowledge of aseptic principles and techniques including characteristics of various detergents, cleaning techniques, sterilizing mediums, sterilizer operation and tests that determine effectiveness of sterilization. A thorough knowledge of packaging, storage and shelf-life characteristics.
Execute knowledge of the use, operation, assembly and disassembly of surgical instruments, medical devices, and specific cleaning, sterilizing and storage requirements of each.
Provide a basic understanding of medical and surgical terminology.
Apply judgement as required when selecting cleaning methods and sterilization mediums, placement of instruments in trays, and substitution of items for missing supplies. Judgement is required in resolving minor problems with equipment. Prudent and experienced judgement is required in emergency situations whether to use less desirable or more costly processing to make available urgently needed supplies.
Ensure the technique of gravity displacement, and cycles for specialty items.
Monitor the operation of the sterilizers using graphs, computer panels, Bowie Dick, and spore challenge tests (biological).
Correctly label and seal wrapped items with appropriately with proper sterilization tape.
Select the correct sterilizationprocess according to the IFU (Instructions For Use) for the medical devices, either Hydrogen Peroxide (STERRAD and V-Pro), Ethylene Oxide (EO) or Steam sterilizationprocesses.
Assemble and prepare the full range of specialty trays and instrument sets for the MOR, clinics, wards, and L&D for proper sterilization utilizing inventory sheets.
Determine the correct method of decontamination and sterilization; removal of blood, tissue fragments, body fluids, and other gross contaminants by wiping, soaking, rinsing, scrubbing and using ultrasonic and washer disinfecting equipment.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Assembles with 100% accuracy all instrument trays sets kits and packs according to the prescribed manner using content lists or set recipe as a guide. Wraps packages and handles them according to the standard procedure. Scans trays/sets one at a time to avoid potential problem. Carefully inventory each tray/set according to the recipe or content lists.Validates containers/wrapped items to ensure all trays are properly prepared by initialing the load card/tape. This confirms filters locks indicators count sheets and valve plates are in place. Marks items with the identifying data and distributes or stores in designated area. Consults with the supervisor team leader or designee when unable to replace parts or when the equipment is deficient in the work area.Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies procedures quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.Disassembles and cleans equipment such as suction machines IV poles and monitors and pumps using approved disinfectants detergents soaps and cleaners (if applicable). Reassembles equipment after cleaning and operates to test for proper functioning. Sends all inoperable equipment to the appropriate holding area for pick up or repair.Dispenses products requested for sterile and non-sterile equipment and supplies. Assigns priority to emergency requests and issues them to the requesting department according to department established procedure. Scans all items/products as appropriate prior to issuing to the department. Enforces/completes the SPD forms for documentation or tracking purposes.Maintains clean and organized work areas and equipment at all times. Follow the routine schedules for cleaning and maintaining the equipment on regular basis as recommended by the manufacturer. Receives/processes loaner trays following established standing procedure.Manually cleans the power tools scopes and lenses and other delicate instruments. Maintains inventory of supplies in decontame area or notifies appropriate personnel. Maintains clean and orderly area at all times within shift. Performs leak test on all flexible endoscopes prior to cleaning and disinfecting according to established procedure. Performs water tests and records them accordingly on a daily basis if applicable. Performs routine cleaning of washers/decontaminators regularly as scheduled daily by shift weekly biweekly or monthly.Sterilizes instruments equipment utensils and supplies using various types of sterilizers according to regulatory and manufacturer's instructions. Properly loads sterilizer in the prescribed manner and sets controls to specified time and temperature according to materials and requirements of items being sterilized. Completes appropriate documentation records prior to sterilization.Reads marks and initials autoclave printout to verify appropriate sterilization cycle and provides records for inspection. Inspects items sterilized prior to sending/receiving to the appropriate department or area to assure integrity of wrapped items and sterilization. Cleans the sterilizer strainer and rinse under running water until debris are removed daily and every shift or as often as needed. Minimal Qualifications

Perform basic principles of microbiology as they apply to medical supply operations, related to the resistance of microorganisms to external destructive agents such as heat, chemicals, and ionizing radiation.
Provide knowledge of aseptic principles and techniques including characteristics of various detergents, cleaning techniques, sterilizing mediums, sterilizer operation and tests that determine effectiveness of sterilization. A thorough knowledge of packaging, storage and shelf-life characteristics.
Execute knowledge of the use, operation, assembly and disassembly of surgical instruments, medical devices, and specific cleaning, sterilizing and storage requirements of each.
Provide a basic understanding of medical and surgical terminology.
Apply judgement as required when selecting cleaning methods and sterilization mediums, placement of instruments in trays, and substitution of items for missing supplies. Judgement is required in resolving minor problems with equipment. Prudent and experienced judgement is required in emergency situations whether to use less desirable or more costly processing to make available urgently needed supplies.
Ensure the technique of gravity displacement, and cycles for specialty items.
Monitor the operation of the sterilizers using graphs, computer panels, Bowie Dick, and spore challenge tests (biological).
Correctly label and seal wrapped items with appropriately with proper sterilization tape.
Select the correct sterilizationprocess according to the IFU (Instructions For Use) for the medical devices, either Hydrogen Peroxide (STERRAD and V-Pro), Ethylene Oxide (EO) or Steam sterilizationprocesses.
Assemble and prepare the full range of specialty trays and instrument sets for the MOR, clinics, wards, and L&D for proper sterilization utilizing inventory sheets.
Determine the correct method of decontamination and sterilization; removal of blood, tissue fragments, body fluids, and other gross contaminants by wiping, soaking, rinsing, scrubbing and using ultrasonic and washer disinfecting equipment.
Become familiar with the operation of cleaning and sterilizing equipment. • Examine all items after decontamination/ pre-sterilization procedure to ensure that gross contaminants have been removed and that instruments function properly.

Degree: Certificate
Education: Completion of a central sterile supply training course.
Certifications in addition to Basic Life Support: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR); Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST)
