Shift: 3:00pm-11:30pm, 40 hours per week, 1.0 FTE
The Sterile Processing Tech II reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization's Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.
* The Sterile Processing Tech II must have thorough knowledge of aseptic techniques and procedures, sterilization techniques and procedures, infection control and work flow principles and requirements, equipment and supply processing; demonstrates and exercises responsible judgment to provide necessary supplies and equipment for the patient care areas.
RESPONSIBILITIES
* Demonstrates knowledge and use of the Tray Tracking computer system in assigned areas of the department.
* Decontaminate, disinfect and/or sterilize surgical instruments in compliance with all established policies and procedures including infection control protocols.
* Inspects, sorts, and processes surgical instrumentation in accordance to policy and procedures.
* Reports and isolates damaged and missing items to Resource Coordinator and Manager.
* Assembles and organizes surgical instrument sets according to instrument count sheets.
* Prepares instrument trays for sterilization by appropriately wrapping or utilizing a sterilization container.
* Performs quality assurance and biological testing on equipment and documents accordingly.
* Operates ultrasonic cleaner, washer-decontaminator, heat-sealing apparatus, sterilizers and cart washers within established guidelines.
* Maintains logs, prepares, checks and records test results. Approves or refuses materials from Sterilizer based on test results. Reports to management any adverse results.
* Executes proper procedures for equipment malfunctions.
* Prepares and delivers accurate and timely case carts for use in surgical procedures.
* Responds to instrument and supply requests from customers in a timely manner.
* Maintains a friendly, clean and orderly work environment.
* Checks and reprocesses any expired items.
* Accurately prepares and labels items for the appropriate method of sterilization.
* Acts as a resource to other staff.
* Maintains a working knowledge of all areas of the department by rotating through assigned work areas to ensure service needs of the customer are meet.
* Maintains National or International Certification for Sterile Processing and Distribution. Assists in responsibility as a self-directed professional for continuing education.
* Completes work from previous shift to accommodate department schedules.
* Dispenses and delivers materials via dumbwaiter, tube system, elevator and/or handcarts.
* Performs role of preceptor during training of new employees.
* Communicates issues, problems and concerns to management in a timely manner.
* Ability to use established communication channels (i.e. Spectralink Phone) in a professional, courteous, and tactful manner, when coverage needed.
* Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required:
* High School Diploma
* Current certification by the National Institute for the Certification of Healthcare Sterile Processing and Distribution Personnel (NICHSPD) or the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM) or Certification Board for Sterile Processing & Distribution (CBSPD)
* Experience and knowledge of surgical instrumentation
* Experience and knowledge in the use of all types of sterilization processes, decontamination, packing and shelf life, including aseptic techniques and their applications to various items processed.
* Physical Demands Requirement:
* Physical demands required for this role include lift/carry up to 35 pounds and a push/pull force up to 50 pounds

* Completes tasks related to processing supplies and equipment, performing cleaning, sterilization, and high-level disinfection (HLD) duties.
* Uses IMPRESS instrument and tray tracking system in all areas
* Identifies and separates instruments into those which can be routinely decontaminated from those which need special handling based on knowledge of item composition and construction.

Part-time faculty are hired on a semester-by-semester basis. A reasonable effort is made to assure the assignment of courses to more senior part-time faculty who are fully qualified by virtue of their education, training, work experience as related to current technology and pedagogical techniques, and who have had a history of successful performance at Oakton College.

Separates instruments from other articles for purposes of washing and decontamination and notifies supervisor of any missing items and reports any malfunctions.
Disassembles, cleans, and decontaminates general, specialty and loaner instrumentation.
Follows manufacturers recommendations when indicated.
Demo
Assembles instruments, sets, and peel-pouched items. Prepares special items upon request. Must be able to communicate both inter and intra departmentally.
Demonstrates knowledge and competency in performing biological testing of steam autoclaves and sterrad units.
Decontaminates patient care equipment from the nursing units.
Adheres to universal precautions and uses appropriate personal protective equipment.
Receives and inspects instruments from the decontamination area and follows established procedures for deletion and repair.
STERILIZATION:
Responsible for loading of all baskets for both ultrasonic cleaners, washer-sterilizers, carriages for plasma sterilizer, and cart washer according to procedures.
Maintains environmental cleanliness and order in general as well as specific work areas.
Prepares documentation for autoclave, plasma bacteriological culture, tray sets, and peel patches.
TRAY SET/ ASSEMBLY
Assembles instruments, sets, and packs according to specifications in departmental catalogue.
Assembles surgical case carts with an accuracy of 90 percent.
Conscientiously performs all functions related to materials processing, which is packaging, loading of machinery, sterilizing, aerating, and handling.
Required to perform other job functions in processing areas as assigned/directed by supervisor.
STERILE STORAGE/SUPPLY:
Responsible for receipt of all reprocessable materials by way of manual delivery according to established procedures and safety regulations.
Responsible for immediate reporting of malfunctioning of any stationary equipment.
Assesses the needs in sterile storage area and maintains inventory levels as designated.
Prepares and maintains inventory of miscellaneous supply items required by Surgical Services.
Identifies outdated equipment and follows procedures for reprocessing.
Notifies supervisory personnel of problems with inventory items.
Alerts supervisor of malfunction of any equipment.
Treats confidentially of all information received and processed.
Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge:
High School Diploma required.
Certified Sterile Prep Tech, CBSPD (Certified Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution) credential required.
Skills:
Good verbal and written communication skills.
Abilities:

Responsibilities
* Highest ranking individual onsite. Influences other technicians, but they report to the remote depot supervisor.
* Must be able to effectively remotely collaborate with remote Depot Supervisor to ensure quality service is provided to the customers and ensure prompt follow-through on service and quality issues and managing inventory levels.
* Monitor productivity, adhere to budgetary guidelines, and work to meet Depot objectives and Velocare operational goals while maintaining quality standards.
* Conduct deliveries to customer locations (primarily the home of the hospital patient), conduct proof of delivery, technology setup, medical products/equipment placement and notify delivery status, as well as provide leadership and training to other depot personnel in same function.
* Must be able to communicate effectively with management and other leaders of the operations to deliver timely and accurate information.
* Ensure quality completion of daily, weekly, and periodical depot tasks such as inventory management, equipment cleaning, van maintenance scheduling, small parcel outbound shipping, technology troubleshooting, temperature monitoring and recording, order dispatching, work order accuracy, and all required documentation.
* Oversee and maintain the accuracy of inventory including tasks such as cycle counts, receiving, executing inventory control procedures, training team members, and ensuring compliance with company policies
* Contribute towards Velocare innovation to improve the quality of our service to our customers.
* Play a key role to help meet Cardinal Health compliance and regulations concerning OSHA, DEA, FDA, State and local authorities.
* Coordinate maintenance of equipment and vehicles, guiding both preventive maintenance and coordinating all necessary repairs, with guidance from Depot Supervisor.
