Sterling High School company history timeline

1896

After the charter was received from the Secretary of State in October of 1896, the trustees made arrangements with the officers of John Wesley Church to open the school in the lecture of the church.

The school was founded as Greenville Academy in 1896 and burned during a time of racial tension.

1902

Finally in 1902, the trustees decided to sell the church property on Silver Hill and purchase land for the school outside the city limits.

1915

In 1915, the Enoree River Baptist Association had bought four acres of land in the City of Greenville with a nine-room building, an orchard and city water.

1929

It was established in 1929, and it was influential in the integration of Greenville’s public facilities and accommodations.

1930

In September, 1930, he was succeeded by Professor Robert L. Hickson, who caught the same vision as its founder.

1954

"It just breaks my heart that the building is no longer there," said McKelvey-Welch, who will be in Greenville next weekend to speak at the 50th reunion of the class of 1954.

1965

Ross S. Sterling High School opened as a junior/senior high school (grades 7–12) in the fall of 1965.

1967

On September 15, 1967, the Greenville News reported a story on the burning down of Sterling High School.

On Friday evening, September 15,1967, the Sterling student body danced at a party sponsored by the Senior Class to raise money for the "Miss Homecoming" drive.

1970

On February 17,1970, the School District of Greenville County was integrated and at the end of this school year there was no longer a school named Sterling.

Sterling's Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) Detachment was first established on-campus in May 1970.

The Blue Raider football team made its first playoff appearance during the 1970 season when it emerged as district champion.

1993

It is also the name of a 1993 historical compilation of the school's history written by Greenville Cultural Exchange Center founder Ruth Ann Butler.

2003

2006

The goal is to raise $40,000 by February and have the project completed by June 2006.

2010

As of 2010 about half of the HISD students zoned to Sterling did not attend that school.

2012

After the 2012 bond, the district began indicating that Jones would be consolidated into Sterling.

Houston Airport System established an aviation club at Sterling and Carnegie Vanguard High School in the fall of 2012.

2013

As of 2013, the school had 900 students, and 1,100 HISD students living in the school's attendance zone opted not to attend Sterling.
