Stevens Institute of Technology company history timeline

1870

CAL's formation followed a history of integrating humanities and liberal arts education which dates back to the university's founding in 1870.

Stevens' appointed trustees erected Edwin A. Stevens Hall, hired new President Henry Morton to create a curriculum blending technical education in engineering and the humanities, and opened the doors of Stevens Institute of Technology in 1870.

1873

In 1873, representatives of Princeton, Yale, Columbia, and Rutgers met in New York City to establish the first American intercollegiate rules for football on the model of the London Football Association.

1880

In 1880, Robert H. Thurston, professor of mechanical engineering, was nominated the first president of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

1902

Henry Gantt, M.S.,1902, developed the Gantt chart, an important project management tool

1905

Hoboken, N.J., Stevens institute of technology, 1905.

1906

In 1906, students, under the guidance of President Humphreys, created the honor system – moral and ethical code governing the life of Stevens students, preaching equality and honest work.

1911

During its tenure as a campus building starting in 1911, it served as a dormitory, cafeteria and office space.

1924

John White Howell, M.E. Electrical Engineering, noted electrical engineer, who furthered the development of the incandescent lamp, 1924 Edison Medal, former president of the Edison Pioneers.

President Humphreys ended the football program after the 1924 season.

1926

D., 1926, founder Hazeltine Corporation, inventor of the neutrodyne radio receiver

1945

Launched on May 29, 1945, the ship was one of 150 named for United States colleges and universities.

1960

Richard Reeves, M.E., 1960, Emmy Award winner, syndicated columnist, author, television commentator

1961

WCPR: Castle Point Radio, the radio station of Stevens Institute of Technology since 1961, has over 10,000 LPs, one of the largest record collections in New Jersey.

1966

Lawrence Babbio, B.E., 1966, vice chairman and president of Verizon Communications, Domestic Telecom Group.

1967

The first women were admitted to Stevens graduate program in 1967.

1971

In 1971, Stevens opened its doors to women for the first time.

1983

The NY Yacht Club would defend its title until the 1983 race.

2002

The women's soccer team was the first athletics team to receive an at-large bid, host and record a victory in the NCAA Tournament over Johns Hopkins in 2002.

2007

Stevens athletic teams have collectively won 22 Empire 8 championships since switching to the conference in 2007.

2009

In 2009, after a two-year investigation by the New Jersey Attorney General, Stevens and the attorney general filed competing lawsuits against one another.

2010

On January 15, 2010, Stevens announced that the institute and the attorney general's office settled the competing lawsuits.

Additionally, in a letter to the institute on January 15, 2010, Babbio and Raveché announced that Raveché had voluntarily decided not to continue as president beyond June 30, 2010 after 22 years in that position.

2011

Stevens partnered with Parsons The New School for Design and Milano School of International Affairs, Management and Urban Policy to design an affordable green home as part of the 2011 Solar Decathlon.

2012

In 2012, Stevens swimmer Brittany Geyer won the national women's 200-yard breaststroke title.

2018

As of fall 2018, the history undergraduate degree is no longer open to first-year or transfer applicants.
