Stew Leonard's company history timeline

1969

In 1969 Stew Leonard turned to retail, opening a 17,000-square-foot store--named simply "Stew Leonard's"--with seven employees selling eight items.

1987

1991

1991: Stew Leonard, Jr., becomes CEO; second store opens in Danbury, Connecticut, under brother Tom Leonard.

1992

1992: Company makes the Guinness Book of World Records for highest sales per square foot of any food store in the United States.

1993

1993: Stew Leonard convicted of tax fraud; company is fined for labeling products with incorrect weights.

1997

In 1997 a proposed site in Orange, Connecticut, was turned down by zoning officials after bitter protests by citizens concerned about the traffic congestion that could be generated by the $25 million store.

1998

In 1999 a third Stew Leonard's was opened, in Yonkers, New York.
