There are different kinds of imaging devices, this includes ultrasounds, sonograms, and echocardiograms. Generally sonographic imaging devices use a handheld probe, which is moved over the area being surveyed to create a two-dimensional or three-dimensional image. These devices can be used for therapy, diagnosis, and even to guide interventional procedures like biopsies or draining fluid collections. A caregiver in this position works varying shifts from 3:00pm - 10:00pm and 10:00pm - 6:30am. A caregiver who excels in this role will: * Perform diagnostic sonographic imaging through the application of non-ionizing, high-frequency sound waves for patients of all ages. * Perform ultrasound studies (i.e. obstetrical, GYN, abdominal, retro peritoneal, small parts, pediatric, and vascular). * Consult with referring physicians regarding patients' medical history and selection of appropriate procedures and equipment required for proper diagnosis. * Review charts, previous reports and requisition prior to the exam. * Educate patients regarding procedures, equipment and exams to ensure understanding and cooperation. * Ensure patients' comfort and safety during and after the exam. * Assist with scheduling of patients and schedule all emergency patients for diagnostic ultrasound procedures. * Monitor all appointments scheduled for ultrasound examinations. * Perform preliminary research on patients when preparations are not provided and determine priority of patients based on the daily schedules. * Acquire, archive, transmit and print images via PACS. * Complete after hours transmission of images and appropriate paperwork. * Immediately report any malfunctions to help desk and PACS Administrator. * Process billing via RIS. * Ensure proper function of ultrasound equipment and notify clinical engineering of any equipment malfunctions. * Adequately supply exam rooms with linen and related medical supplies. * Assist with clinical instruction of ultrasound students and residents and in-service education of caregivers. * Assist with orienting new caregivers to the equipment, department procedures and scanning protocols. * Demonstrate ultrasound equipment for caregivers and visitors. * Potentially rotate through all diagnostic imaging modalities, sites and/or locations. * Assist in new investigative techniques, procedures and equipment. * Maintain the most up to date knowledge in the field through self-motivated education and attendance of appropriate conferences and symposiums. * RDMS must be maintained and in good standing. * If working within the Imaging Institute, perform non-invasive vascular studies to include veins, arteries, pulse volume readings and assist the physician during invasive studies.
