Stewart Enterprises company history timeline
Stewart Enterprises was founded in New Orleans in 1910 by Albert Stewart, owner of the Acme Realty Company, when his real estate business acquired the three St Vincent de Paul Cemeteries and the St Vincent de Paul Marble Shop, a company that built monuments for the cemeteries.
By 1931, his sons Frank Sr. and Charles incorporated the business as the Acme Marble & Granite Co.
In 1949, the company established Lake Lawn Park Cemetery in New Orleans and developed a large perpetual-care community mausoleum with more than 31,000 crypts.
In 1969, the company was still chugging along with its original three cemeteries.
In 1969, under the tutelage of President Frank B. Stewart, Jr. (Albert's grandson), the company purchased the adjoining Metairie Cemetery.
The company made its first foray outside the New Orleans market in 1979, when it acquired one of the industry's largest and most prestigious properties, Dallas's Restland Memorial Park and Funeral Home.
Stewart expanded at a relatively moderate pace over the course of the ensuing decade, increasing from five cemeteries and one funeral home to 33 funeral homes and 26 cemeteries throughout the southeastern United States by 1989.
The program took Stewart international in 1993, when it purchased a Puerto Rican funeral home.
By the end of 1996, over two-fifths of Stewart's cemeteries had on-site funeral homes.
Notwithstanding the breakneck pace of acquisitions made by Stewart and its two primary rivals, the death care industry remained highly fragmented in 1997.
Those concerns grew somewhat more pressing in 1997, when Service Corp.
