1995: Manville sells its remaining interest in SMC.

1997

William E. Nettles was brought in to help turn the company around and appointed chairman and CEO in August 1997.

SMC aimed to take proceeds from the IPO to incorporate radical changes in mining methods and double production by mid-1997.

Platinum prices reached $400 an ounce in 1997.

1998

Johns Manville Corporation still held a 5 percent royalty in the mine, which it sold to the Franco-Nevada Mining Corporation for $36 million in March 1998.

2000

One Manville executive quoted by Business Week speculated the price could hit $600 an ounce by 2000.

Only 15 percent of the company's metals production would be sold forward in 2000.

2001

2001: SMC migrates from the American to the New York Stock Exchange.

2013

Since its initial establishment in 2013, Sibanye-Stillwater has grown and diversified significantly – both geographically and by metal produced.

2018

Three more significant transactions were concluded over the next two years beginning with the purchase of a 38.05% stake in DRDGOLD Limited, a world leader in the retreatment of gold tailings, in July 2018.

Also in 2018, a US$500 million stream financing deal was concluded with Wheaton International, significantly strengthening our balance sheet and reducing net leverage.

2020

In February 2020, an internal restructuring process was concluded which changed the group holding company from Sibanye Gold Limited to Sibanye Stillwater Limited (Sibanye-Stillwater). Following that restructuring, Sibanye-Stillwater began trading under the tickers JSE: SSW and NYSE: SBSW.
